A ventilation control unit (), regulating a gas flow () within a ventilation system (), includes a reception module (), first and second calculation modules () and an output module (). The reception module has a signal interface () receiving inspiratory and expiratory flow signals () at regular time intervals. The first calculation module calculates a leak flow () based on a difference between the current inspiratory gas flow and the current expiratory gas flow, with an external gas flow source () separated from a ventilation circuit of the ventilation system. The second calculation module calculates an external gas flow () after connecting the external gas flow source to the ventilation circuit based on the leak flow and the difference between the current inspiratory gas flow and the current expiratory gas flow. The output module outputs an output signal (), based on the external gas flow.

A process is provided for the automatic control of a respirator for changing over (triggering) between consecutive phases of respiration (inspiration and expiration phases), wherein a pneumatic breathing activity signal u(t) and a non-pneumatic breathing activity signal u(t) of a patient are picked up. The intervals &#x394;(t) and &#x394;(t) to the associated threshold variables are respectively determined starting from a preset reference point in time since the beginning of the present phase of respiration. The intervals are standardized to one another at &#x3b4;(t) and &#x3b4;(t), such that the intervals have equal interval values at a preset reference point in time. The standardized intervals &#x3b4;(t) and &#x3b4;(t) are averaged to a mean interval indicator and a changeover is made into the next phase of respiration when the combined interval indicator is 0.
