An infinitely variable physical vapor deposition matrix system that allows the synthesis of multiple combinatorial catalyst samples at essentially the same time, by the co-deposition of multiple materials, or the sequential layer by layer deposition of multiple catalyst constituents, or both, such that the optimum mix of materials for a pre-determined application can be experimentally determined in subsequent testing. The discovery of optimal catalyst combinations for utilization in specified reactions and devices is facilitated. The high throughput system reduces the time and complexity of processing typically required to formulate and test combinatorial catalyst materials.

High throughput physical vapor deposition system for material combinatorial studies

The present teachings are directed to a method of converting water and a carbon-containing compound, such as CO, into a hydrocarbon through a process of absorbing sunlight on a light-absorbing component to photoelectrochemically oxidize water and reacting the products from that water oxidation reaction over a catalyst with the carbon-containing compound to produce the desired hydrocarbon compound.

The present teachings are directed methods of producing tungsten-containing nanoparticles, specifically tungsten nanoparticles and tungsten oxide nanoparticles with an average particle size of less than about five nanometers.

Methods of producing tungsten nanoparticles

Synthesis of nanoparticles with particle size control is provided by the method of using two different metal-containing precursors, a capping component, an optional reducing agent, and then contacting the two precursors with the capping component to form a reaction solution, which is heated to produce first and second metals-containing nanoparticles. By controlling the ratio of the concentration of the capping component to the total concentration of the two metal-containing precursors, the nanoparticles can have diameters ranging between about 1 nm to about 15 nm. A decrease in the concentration of the capping component typically increases the size of the nanoparticles. Preferred compositions include Pt and Co-containing alloy nanoparticles. Controlled synthesis of larger, about 6 nm to about 12 nm, sized nanoparticles can be achieved in a solvent-free reaction process.

A substrate having a coating of small size metal oxide particles, &#x3c;5 microns and more particularly &#x3c;3 microns, formed on the substrate surface and a micro-component reaction chamber assembly including such a substrate in which the substrate is produced by thermally spraying, plasma spraying, or flame spraying a homogenous particle composition of selected hydroxide, carbonate, nitrate and hydroxide compositions onto the surface of the metal substrate.

The present teachings are directed toward electrocatalyst compositions of platinum, tungsten and at least a third metal for use in fuel cells. The electrocatalyst composition is composed essentially of platinum present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 20 percent and about 55 percent, tungsten present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 30 percent and about 75 percent, and at least a third metal present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 1 percent and about 40 percent. The present teachings are directed toward electrocatalyst composition of an alloy of platinum and tungsten for use in fuel cells. The alloy consists essentially of platinum metal present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 20 percent and about 50 percent, and tungsten metal present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 50 percent and about 80 percent.

The present teachings are directed toward electrocatalyst compositions of platinum, titanium and at least a third metal for use in fuel cells. The electrocatalyst composition is composed essentially of platinum present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 50 percent and about 85 percent, titanium present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 5 percent and about 30 percent, and at least a third metal present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 1 percent and about 30 percent. The third metal can be at least one member selected from the group consisting of cobalt, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, silver, osmium, iridium and gold.

The present teachings are directed toward electrocatalyst compositions of alloys of platinum, tungsten and nickel for use in fuel cells. The alloys consists essentially of platinum present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 20 percent and about 45 percent, tungsten present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 30 percent and about 70 percent, and nickel present in an atomic percentage ranging between about 5 percent and about 25 percent.

The present teachings are directed toward electrocatalyst compositions of platinum, titanium and at least a third metal for use in fuel cells. A fuel cell catalyst comprising platinum, chromium, and copper, nickel or a combination thereof. In one or more embodiments, the concentration of platinum is less than 50 atomic percent, and/or the concentration of chromium is less than 30 atomic percent, and/or the concentration of copper, nickel, or a combination thereof is at least 35 atomic percent.
