The exposure of components to high-pressure fluids can result in the application of high tensile stresses to those components, which may lead to reduced life. The preload system described herein helps to reduce the magnitude of those tensile stresses by providing a body and a plug. The body includes a first bore and a second bore. The first bore is configured to be exposed to high tensile stresses. The second bore includes a first engagement structure and a bottom surface near a first portion of the first bore. The plug includes a second engagement structure and a first end. The second engagement structure engages the first engagement structure to force the first end of the plug against the bottom surface of the bore. The force of the plug against the bottom surface of the bore applies a compressive preload to the first portion of the first bore.

System and method for preloading a high stress area of a component

A fuel injection pump is provided. The fuel injection pump includes a barrel including an inner surface defining a bore. The fuel injection pump also includes a plunger movable inside the bore of the barrel. An outer surface of the plunger and the inner surface of the barrel form a clearance therebetween. One or more sleeves at least partially encircle one or more portions of an outer surface of the barrel, and are configured to apply a load to the outer surface of the barrel.

A unitary high pressure seal provides a fluid seal against multiple surfaces, at least one of which is static and one of which is dynamically loaded. The seal includes a seal body and separated load and sealing lands. The load land interfaces with the static surface, e.g., a valve assembly barrel, to seal the body to that surface, whereas the sealing land dynamically provides a seal against a variably positioned surface, e.g., a valve head surface. In this manner, when the valve is closed, the load land is not affected by the dynamic loads on the sealing land, and leakage at the static surface is thus minimized.

The pump described herein provides a potentially lower cost alternative to conventional high-pressure pumps by providing a head, a plunger, and a control valve assembly. The head defines a valve bore having a first diameter, a plunger bore having a second diameter, and an intermediate chamber having a third diameter. The plunger is configured to reciprocate within the plunger bore. The plunger, the plunger bore, and the intermediate chamber at least partially define a pumping chamber. The control valve assembly is coupled to the head and includes an actuator moveable in response to an input signal and a valve element coupled to the actuator. The valve element is received within the valve bore and moveable between an open and a closed position. The valve element includes a body having a fourth diameter and a valve head having a fifth diameter. The first diameter is no larger than the second diameter.

A high volume high pressure common rail pump for a fuel system includes pairs of pump head assemblies in phase with each other but oriented in opposition to one another about a rotating cam shaft. Pump pistons in the pump head assemblies simultaneously undergo pumping strokes via a shared two lobe cam of the rotating cam shaft. The pump may include two pairs of pump head assemblies, and each head assembly may include two pump pistons. The cam shaft includes two cams sufficiently out of phase with one another that the cam shaft always has a positive torque even when the cam lobes are symmetrical. In addition, because the pumping is done simultaneously on opposite sides of the cam shaft, the forces on the cam shaft are balanced and its support bearings experience less wear and tear.

A mounting flange for housing a bearing cup of a roller bearing is disclosed. The mounting flange includes a recess sized to receive the bearing cup. A radial wall is defined by the recess and an outer periphery of the mounting flange. The radial wall includes at least one region of greater radial thickness than the radial thickness at another region. The at least one region of radial thickness defines at least one ear. The mounting flange also includes at least one flexibility pocket in the at least one ear. The flexibility pocket is configured to provide substantially uniform, radial deformation to the mounting flange when the bearing cup is fit into the recess.

The present invention finds applicability in barrel assemblies defining a ring shaped cavity that is to be fluidly sealed from a central bore. Current barrel assemblies, such as those used in hydraulic pumps, are made from castings. This can be undesirable due to long production time and difficulty in producing consistent components. The present invention is directed to overcoming one or more of these problems by disclosing a barrel assembly and a method for making the same wherein the barrel and the plug are manufactured from the same material, or from materials having similar coefficients of thermal expansion. Thus, upon pump operation and optional heat treatment of the assembled barrel assembly, both the barrel and the plug will expand in a similar manner. The present invention finds application in axial piston pumps, especially for high pressure hydraulic systems, and other two piece components having a cavity requiring a seal.
