A variable cam timing phaser includes a housing disposed about an axis and having an inner housing surface defining a housing interior. The variable cam timing phaser includes a rotor moveable between an advance position and a retard position. The rotor includes a hub and a vane, with the rotor and the housing defining a chamber. The vane further defines the chamber into an advance chamber and a retard chamber. The variable cam timing phaser also includes a control valve assembly including a valve housing and a control piston. The variable cam timing phaser also includes a chamber biasing assembly disposed in one of the advance and the retard chambers and configured to bias the rotor into a predetermined position between the advance and the retard positions. The chamber biasing assembly includes a chamber piston, a chamber biasing member, and a chamber check valve.

Variable cam timing phaser

A variable camshaft timing (VCT) system includes an independent camshaft phaser, receiving input from a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine, having an output coupled to one of an inner concentric camshaft or an outer concentric camshaft; and a dependent camshaft phaser, coupled to the other of the inner concentric camshaft or the outer concentric camshaft, comprising a half-Oldham link configured to permit radial movement of the inner concentric camshaft relative to the outer concentric camshaft in one radial direction and at least one pivotable arm configured to permit radial movement of the inner concentric camshaft relative to the outer concentric camshaft in another, different radial direction.

Variable camshaft timing system

A two-step roller finger follower assembly for use in conjunction with a camshaft of an internal combustion engine, wherein the camshaft has at least one first lobe and at least one second lobe. The roller finger follower assembly comprises a follower body for engaging the first cam lobe and having a central aperture, a follower pivotably disposed on the follower body in the central aperture for engaging the second cam lobe, and a limiting stop disposed on the follower body for engaging a feature on the follower to limit travel of the follower body with respect to the follower. The limiting stop prevents overtravel of the follower body during valve-deactivation mode of the assembly, thus preventing excessive leak down of an associated hydraulic lash adjuster.

Two-step roller finger cam follower assembly having a follower travel limiter

A method for providing supplemental internal air cooling to a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine. The method involves deactivating the fuel injector to one cylinder for a predetermined time period or temperature decrease, based upon engine operating conditions, and then reactivating the fuel injector. This results in cool air being pumped through the fuel-deactivated cylinder by the reciprocating action of the piston therein, which air-cools the walls, piston, and head of that cylinder from the inside. In response to a controlling algorithm in an Engine Control Module, various of the engine fuel injectors may be deactivated and then reactivated sequentially to provide distributed cooling over the entire engine. The invention is especially useful for motorcycle engines having two or more cylinders when the motorcycles are used at low or stop-and-go speeds, such as in parades or other ceremonial functions.

Supplemental internal air cooling of an internal combustion engine

A two-step roller finger follower having a high-lift follower portion that rotates relative to a low-lift follower portion about a pivot shaft, including a lost-motion compression spring disposed in a linear bore formed in the high-lift portion to exert force against an curved pad on the back side of the valve pallet of the low-lift portion. The spring is retained and guided in its bore by a spring retainer having a planar bottom for engaging the curved pad. Preferably the retainer is a cup positioned in the spring bore such that the stroke of the cup is limited, to prevent leak-down of the associated hydraulic lash adjuster. Driving the spring by a linear-acting retainer in a linear bore causes the spring to be compressed linearly, resulting in a highly stable and predictable spring rate.

Two-step roller finger follower

A roller finger follower rocker arm assembly for deactivating an engine valve. A follower body pivots on a hydraulic lash adjuster, and engages a valve stem or lifter. The body receives a reciprocating member having a first and second rollers outboard of the body for following eccentrics of a cam lobe that straddles the body, the body having elongate openings on either side of the reciprocating member. A locking pin selectively locks and unlocks the body to the reciprocating member. The reciprocating member does not make contact with the cam lobe and functions only as a link between the latching mechanism and the rollers. The pin engages the reciprocating member by a latching spring and is disengaged by pressurized oil supplied through the hydraulic lash adjuster. Means is provided for limiting axial growth of the HLA during deactivation mode of the rocker arm assembly.

Roller finger follower assembly for valve deactivation

A system for bringing an internal combustion engine to a stop at a predetermined angular position of an engine shaft, such as a crankshaft or a camshaft, with respect to the engine's valves. The optimum shaft stop position is the point wherein the fewest lifters are collapsed the least amount. Exemplary methods and apparatus include using the engine starter motor to jog the stopped engine to the desired position; using the engine alternator to impose a variable electromagnetic load on the engine to bring the engine to a stop at the desired position; using variable firing of cylinders to control the deceleration profile to bring the engine to a stop at the desired position; and providing one or more detents formed in the shaft and using a shaft follower to control the stop position of the shaft by engaging the follower into a detent.

Controlled engine camshaft stopping position

An improved dual feed hydraulic lash adjuster (HLA), for use in an internal combustion engine, comprising a hollow body and a plunger assembly disposed in a bore of the engine. A one-piece plunger body includes a first chamber for forming a low-pressure oil reservoir and receiving a lash adjustment mechanism, and a second chamber open at one end and partially closed hemispherically for supporting a rocker arm and providing valve deactivating oil thereto for an auxiliary valve actuation system. The first and second chambers are separated by a transverse web, optionally having a small-diameter passage therethrough for air evacuation. The one-piece plunger body provides a high degree of resistance to side loads which may be imposed on the HLA in use.

Dual feed hydraulic lash adjuster

In a two-step roller finger cam follower, a slider arm for engaging a high-lift cam lobe is pivotally mounted to the body and can variably engage a latch pin slidably disposed in a latch pin channel. A second channel in the body opens onto the slider arm and contains a timing pin that rides on an eccentric surface of the slider arm to extend or retract the timing pin. A bore between the latch pin channel and the timing pin channel contains a ball controlled by the timing pin to lock the latch pin into an engaged or disengaged position. The cam lobe has an undercut region such that the latch pin is allowed to move between engaged and disengaged position only when the slider arm is in the undercut region of the cam lobe. The latch pin can move only when the timing pin permits.

Latch timing mechanism for a two-step roller finger cam follower

A two-step roller finger follower including an elongate body having side walls defining coaxially disposed shaft orifices, a pallet end and a socket end interconnecting with the side walls to define a slider arm aperture, and a latch channel. The socket end is mountable to an hydraulic lash adjuster, and the pallet end is matable with a valve stem. A slider arm for engaging a high-lift cam lobe is disposed in the slider arm aperture and has a first end pivotably mounted to the pallet end of the body and the second end forming a slider tip for engaging an activation/deactivation latch. The latch is slidably disposed in the latch channel, and the latch has a nose section for selectively engaging the slider tip. A spool-shaped roller having first and second roller elements fixedly attached to the shaft is rotatably disposed in the shaft orifices, the roller being adapted to follow the surface motion of low-lift cam lobes. Preferably, the shaft is journalled in roller or needle bearings which extend between and through the first and second shaft orifices, being thus exposed to normal copious oil flow through the RFF.

Two-step roller finger cam follower having spool-shaped low-lift roller

A two-step finger follower rocker arm assembly including a follower body having a socket at a first end for engaging a hydraulic lash adjuster and a pad at an opposite end for engaging a valve stem. A passage through the follower body in the direction of actuation by an engine cam is slidingly receivable of a slider member for variably engaging a central high-lift lobe. A lost-motion spring urges the slider member into contact with the central lobe. A latch member driven by a piston selectively locks the slider member to the follower body, causing the follower to follow the motion of the central cam lobe. When the latch member is disengaged, the slider member slides within the follower body, allowing lateral rollers to follow lateral cam lobes. The lateral rollers may be supported on the body by a rotatable cross-shaft or a fixed cross-shaft, or by a pair of fixed stub shafts, or by a pair of fixed bearing races.

Two-step finger follower rocker arm

A two-step finger follower rocker arm assembly including a follower body having a socket at a first end for engaging a hydraulic lash adjuster and a pad at an opposite end for engaging a valve stem. A passage through the follower body in the direction of actuation by an engine cam lobe is slidingly receivable of a slider member for variably engaging a central cam lobe, preferably a high-lift lobe. An elongate shaft extends through a transverse bore in the slider member and through a slotted passage in the slider member. In the follower body, the shaft is provided with bearings supporting first and second lateral roller followers on opposite sides of the body for variably engaging first and second preferably low-lift lateral cam lobes flanking the central cam lobe. A lost-motion spring urges the slider member into contact with the central lobe. A latch member driven by a piston selectively locks the slider member to the follower body such that the follower follows the motion of the central cam lobe. When the latch member is disengaged from the slider member, the member slides within the follower body, allowing the lateral rollers to engage and follow the lateral cam lobes. Preferably, the latching mechanism is provided as a pre-assembled cartridge unit.

A variable valve actuation assembly for actuation of an engine intake valve between low-lift and high-lift modes. The VVA assembly includes a special rocker assembly having a pivotable central high-lift cam follower and two peripheral low-lift cam followers; a camshaft having low-lift and high-lift lobes engageable with the respective cam followers; a primary latching assembly including a slidable primary latching pin in the rocker assembly for engaging and disengaging the high-lift follower; a solenoid for causing the primary latching pin to be engaged and disengaged; and a secondary latching mechanism between the solenoid and the primary latching pin to automatically limit engagement and disengagement of the primary latching pin to times in the duty cycle of the camshaft (during lift events) when ejections of the primary latching pin are not possible.

Variable valve actuation assembly for an internal combustion engine

A hydraulic lash adjuster includes a leak down land and a support land that are substantially cylindrical. The support land is substantially coaxial relative to the leak down land, and at least a portion of the support land is disposed radially opposite the leak down land.

Compact hydraulic lash adjuster

A valve actuator subassembly, such as a finger follower and a hydraulic lash adjuster or a rocker arm and push rod, are held together for shipping and installation in an engine valve train by a retainer clip made of wire or sheet, metal or plastic material. The retainer clip includes a U-shaped body having first and second nearly parallel legs interconnected at first ends by a resilient portion. The legs are adapted to resiliently engage opposite sides of a wall of a rockable actuator member having a raised portion on a first side aligned with a socket on a second side. The first leg includes a guide recess adjacent a second end and adapted to guidingly engage the raised portion on the first side of the wall. The second leg includes a gripping recess adjacent a second end and has a pair of opposed resilient edges adapted to frictionally grip nearly opposite sides of a cylindrical member, such as push rod or lash adjuster plunger, upon engagement of the cylindrical member with the socket in the wall of the actuator member. The resilient edges frictionally grip the cylindrical member at points nearly aligned on an axis normal to the directions of said legs from their first to their second ends so that the retainer clip frictionally retains said cylindrical member in the socket of the rockable actuator member in the subassembly positioned for installation in a valve train. Various embodiments are disclosed.
