A method and system for transporting an offshore structure such as a wind turbine generator includes a supporting frame in which the offshore structure is assembled on land in an upright configuration. The frame is used for lifting the structure onto a transport vessel, on which it is retained in the upright configuration. At its location of use, the offshore structure is transferred to a pre-prepared foundation. The foundation is provided with a frame which cooperates with the supporting frame. The supporting frame includes a plurality of legs having hydraulically controlled feet. The frame of the foundation includes an equal number of supporting formations on which the feet ultimately rest. The feet are moveable in response to the hydraulic control along a nominally vertical line of action and provide a damping arrangement for the mounting of the offshore structure.

Installation of offshore structures

Access means are provided for accessing a fixed offshore structure () such as a wind turbine, larger vessel or the like form a smaller vessel (), or for providing for transfer between vessels. One or more guide wires () are connected from the vessel () to the fixed structure () or second vessel and placed in tension such as by directing the vessel away from the fixed structure. In one embodiment, inflatable members () are suspendable from the guide wires and inflation of the inflatable members causes them to extend along the guide wires to form an access surface across which personnel may walk to access the fixed structure or second vessel from the first vessel. Mounting means are also provided which accommodate relative rotational, translational and pitching movement of the apparatus and vessel, caused by wave motion. In another embodiment, a bridge member is retained on a runway of the first vessel and deployed using said guide wires.

Access method between marine structures and apparatus

A tensioner for deploying a member such as a pipe or cable, such as a sub-sea cable deployed from a ship, comprises an endless track and drive means for driving the track. The track includes a plurality of traction elements mounted thereon for movement with the track. Each traction element includes one or more cushions for supporting the member, and a pair of opposed arms mounted on respective sides of the base of the traction element. One or more of the arms is pivotally mounted for movement between a clamping position and a release position. In an alternative arrangement, four moveable arms are linked in diametrically opposite pairs to move between a release position and a clamping position. Cushions on the arms clamp the member in conjunction with the cushions of the traction element, when the arms are in the clamping position. Guide means are provided to urge the arms into the clamping position to grip the member as it passes through the tensioner.

Longitudinal load varying device for elongate members

In a load handling device for use with a load having a lifting attachment, the lifting attachment being so attached to the load that, when the load is suspended by the lifting attachment, the load is free to pivot relative to the lifting attachment about at least one axis. The load handling device engages the lifting attachment raises the load; so that it is suspended by the lifting attachment, and lowers it. The load handling device includes a stabiliser movable between a retracted position in which it is substantially clear of the load and an extended position in which it contacts the load on either side of the said axis to limit or control pivoting movement of the load about that axis. The stabiliser may be moveable by a plurality of hydraulic rams connected in a closed loop system. Restriction of the flow of the hydraulic fluid between the rams acts to damp movement of the load.

Load handling device

A prime mover for extracting power from moving water is described comprising a body which is caused to oscillate in water by reversing the direction of thrust generated by at least one submerged control member e.g. a hydroplane or rotating cylinder protruding from a side of the body.

Extracting power from moving water

A marine plough includes twin, complementary steering mechanisms, one or more soil-engaging fins, which are able to be steered, and a tow rope attachment mechanism that enables adjustment of the position of the tow rope retention point relative to the plough. This alters the position at which the line of a tow rope crosses the longitudinal axis of the plough, so that the plough can operate at offset tow positions. The tow rope attachment mechanism includes a bridle having two bridle limbs terminating at respective bridle limb retention points. The adjustment of the position of the tow rope retention point relative to the plough is done by moving the bridle rope retention points or adjusting the relative length of the bridle limbs. The bridle limb retention points can be moved, using cylinders, from towing positions to lifting positions at which the tow bridle can be used to lift plough in a substantially level attitude. The soil-engaging fins are carried by supporting skids, in turn carried by a steering member able to be pivoted relative to the plough about a substantially vertical axis. Ploughing depth can be adjusted by altering the vertical distance between the skids and the steering member.

A prime mover for extracting power from moving water is described comprising a body which is caused to oscillate in water by reversing the direction of thrust generated by at least one submerged control member e.g. a hydroplane or rotating cylinder protruding from a side of the body. Preferably, the prime mover comprises an open bottomed tank which when it oscillates alternately compresses and decompresses a fluid inside it between a closed top of the tank and the water surface. Preferably the fluid is air. Other energy removal schemes can be combined with the prime mover to generate power.
