This invention is in the field of safety devices to lessen injuries arising from impact in vehicles, particularly automobiles. A bolster which may be employed to reduce impact severity to passengers from either frontal or side impacts is activated by impact sensing devices. The housing of the bolster has a lateral length L. Upon activation, the bolster is inflated with an activating fluid and extends the lateral length L of bolster upon activation.

A running board assembly for mounting to a vehicle such as a truck includes an extruded running board body and a cover member. Advantageously the extruded running board body is made from an extrudable plastic and the cover member is advantageously made of a material having the desired exterior finish. The cover member may be metallic and have the appearance of a chrome or polished finish. The cover extends over the upper and outboard surface of the running board body to provide the desired appearance characteristics. The running board assembly is affixed to the vehicle by a plurality of mounting brackets.

A bolster for assembly to an instrument panel assembly of an automotive vehicle is provided. The vehicle has a steering column with a steering column axis and at least two energy absorbing brackets located laterally to either side of the steering column axis. The bolster comprises a unitary structure having a generally forward wall and a generally aft wall. The forward wall has a forward wall, forward surface. The forward wall, forward surface includes first and second bolster transfer surfaces for transferring forces from the bolster to the energy absorbing brackets. The bolster further comprises a plurality of generally laterally extending rib structures. The rib structures extend from adjacent the first bolster transfer surface to adjacent the second bolster transfer surface. The plurality of generally laterally extending ribs structures have sufficient strength to inhibit bending of the bolster about a vertical plane when struck by a driver's knees at a point or points that are not directly aft of the bolster transfer surfaces, when the force is equal to or less than an amount specified by a test standard.

A process for making a molded running board assembly for installation on a vehicle includes blow molding the body of the running board and incorporating one or more additional components such as a step plate or a trim strip. The process involves placing the insert into the blow mold cavity in a subcavity, holding the insert by vacuum pressure and then extruding and blow molding a parison to simultaneously mold the running board and integrate the insert.

This invention relates to an automotive air filter assembly, in particular, an assembly which includes an air flow chamber portion and a liquid reservoir portion. The air flow portion includes a panel filter for filtering air flowing to an engine. The panel filter includes air filtration media and hydrocarbon absorption media to inhibit release of hydrocarbon vapours to the air on engine shut down. The air flow portion also may include resonance chambers for acoustic silencing purposes. The liquid reservoir portion can include a pump for delivery of fluid such as windshield washer fluid.

A running board for a vehicle such as a truck is mounted to the vehicle body using a C-shaped mounting bracket. The bracket has an open clearance area to accommodate air conditioning conduits or other similar structure adjacent the vehicle body. The running board may include pivotable end caps which may be pivoted to lie parallel with the support surface of the running board and overlying front or rear vehicle fenders. Mounting bolts for the end cap may pass through the running board body of the vehicle fender and the vehicle body.

A plastic fuel tank for use in a vehicle to carry gasoline, diesel fuel and the like has an upper wall, a lower wall and side walls. In order to inhibit relative deflection of the upper and lower wall toward each other, such as may occur when vacuum pressure is introduced into the tank by typical fuel sensor systems, the tank is equipped with a resilient columnar member extending between the upper and lower walls. The resilient columnar member thus limits deflection and changes in volume of the tank to not greater than one liter. The columnar member is hollow so as to not reduce the fuel capacity of the tank. The columnar member may be held in position by structural walls within the tank or by welding to either the top or bottom wall of the tank.

A fan shroud for use with a cooling fan adjacent to the radiator for a water cooled internal combustion engine includes a generally central opening for directing flow of air to or from a radiator. The fan shroud includes at least one integral chamber for storage of other liquids typically used with a vehicle which may be under pressure. To facilitate handling pressure, the storage chamber includes a plurality of individual storage modules which are interconnected by a plurality of fluid flow channels so that the total storage capacity of the chamber is the sum of the storage capacity of the modules and interconnecting fluid flow channels. The modules and channels are made by bringing the front and back walls of a blow molded fan shroud into contact with each other to define there between channels and modules. Advantageously, the shroud comprises several such chambers and may be used to house engine coolant, power steering fluid or other fluids. In addition, the fan shroud can include chambers for storing fluids which are not necessarily under pressure such as windshield washer fluid and the like.
