To improve WWAN coverage, an access node broadcasts overhead messages on a first channel covering a first channel environment and a second channel covering a second channel environment within a coverage region. The overhead messages carry network overhead parameters for allowing wireless mobile devices to acquire and maintain traffic channels within the cellular system. The overhead message channels are configured so that a user perceives uninterrupted wireless services while moving through different channel environments in the coverage region. In one embodiment, the overhead message channels are separate physical channels configured with different broadcast parameters to provide coverage in different environments. In another embodiment, the overhead parameter information is segregated into base and extended components that are encoded and layer modulated onto separate logical channels. Using layered modulation, wireless mobile devices can receive base components in poor coverage regions. The base components include overhead parameters for acquiring a WWAN channel.

A dynamic data pool on ad-hoc networks. The present example provides for a 'swarm' of nodes that share or provide a 'repository' of shared dynamic data. The swarm is a collection of nodes connected via networks, including but not limited to Wireless personal area network (&#x201c;PAN&#x201d;), local area network (&#x201c;LAN&#x201d;), wide area network (&#x201c;WAN&#x201d;) and/or the like. The dynamic data pool may be implemented by an application program, with network connectivity provided through programs constructed in a layered structure (&#x201c;network stack&#x201d;) or the like. Provision is made for initializing the swarm, for nodes entering and leaving the swarm, and other functions for managing the swarm.

Managing a dynamic data pool on ad-hoc networks

An exemplary method for selecting one of a plurality of systems on a multi-mode device capable of communicating on a first air interface technology and a second air interface technology is disclosed. Initially, a carrier input associated with one of the first and second air interface technologies is received. The carrier input typically defines at least one system selection event. Next, a first network acquisition attempt of the other one of the first and second air interface technologies is triggered responsive to the system selection event. The results of the first network acquisition attempt are determined and stored, and subsequently used for subsequent system selection determinations between the first and second air interface technologies.

System selection method and arrangement for mobile wireless communication devices

An active voice call with an access terminal is transferred from an originating wireless network to a destination wireless network in response to a call continuation message transmitted by the access terminal to a destination network switch of the destination wireless network. The call continuation message includes a connected number indicator identifying the voice call and a call continuation indicator indicating the voice call should be routed through the destination network switch. In some circumstances, an originating network switch of the originating wireless network identifies the voice call to the network switch of the first wireless network to facilitate the transfer.

Apparatus, system and method for transferring an active call between wireless communication networks

Apparatuses and methods for implementing the GPS positioning functionalities in devices that are capable of communicating using IP packets are disclosed. The aiding-information-enhanced GPS positioning (IAIE-GPSP) technique is decoupled from the specific requirements of specific telecommunication networks and protocols (such as CDMA). By decoupling the IAIE-GPSP capability from specific telecommunication network/protocol requirements, embodiments of the invention enable any type of device, irrespective whether a voice communication capability is present, to be endowed with GPS positioning functionalities and to enjoy the rapid GPS position fix facilitated by the aiding information.

System and method for WWAN/WLAN position estimation

A system for updating a wireless application is provided. The system has a network service area that uses multiple networks to provide wireless coverage. An application server couples to one of the networks, and is used to communicate with local applications that operate on wireless devices within the network service area. These wireless devices also operate standard lower-level process that provide for basic connectivity and information transfer, with these lower-level process providing a network identification value. The local application monitors this network identification value, and when it changes, generates an alert that is transmitted to the application server. The alert may include information regarding the new network, therefore the application server is updated to know what network the wireless device is operating on.
