In order to reduce splitting in a perforated, heat shrinkable, thermoplastic bags made from seamless tubing, rather than employ needle punched perforations, it has been discovered that slits cut by a knife blade will surprisingly reduce the splitting when a product, such as a meat product, is cooked within the bag.

Disclosed is a multiple-layer cook-in film from which packages such as bags or casings can be made. The films have a first food contact layer that bindingly adheres during cook-in to a contained meat product. The first layer comprises a polyamide composition, which is preferably (I) a polyamide or (II) a blend of a polyamide and (i) polyethylene, or a blend of a polyamide and (ii) a copolymer of an alpha-olefin having the formula RHC.dbd.CH.sub.2 wherein R is H or C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl and an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid.

Multiple-layer, cook-in film

A pasteurizable and/or cook-in shrink film is provided with good interlaminar adhesion and good orientability, and characterized by the presence of ethylene alkyl acrylate copolymer in shrink and abuse layers, in adhesive layers, or both. An associated method for making the film is also provided that includes coextrusion of the multilayer film, optional irradiation, and orientation.

Disclosed is a multi-layer heat-shrinkable (oriented) film having a barrier layer of polyvinylidene chloride copolymer and having an outer layer of polyamide. The polyamide layer is directly adhered to the barrier layer. Also disclosed is a method to make the film and barrier bags made therefrom.

A pasteurizable and/or cook-in shrink film is provided that includes a first or sealing layer of a nonlipophillic polymeric material having a softening point greater than that of the following shrink layer; a second or shrink controlling layer, melt bonded to the first layer, of an ethylene homopolymer or copolymer; a third or adhesive layer, melt bonded to the second layer, of a chemically modified polyethylene being irradiatively cross-linkable and having functional groups with a relatively strong affinity for the following barrier layer; a fourth or barrier layer, melt bonded to the third layer, of a hydrolyzed ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer; a fifth or adhesive layer as in said third layer, melt bonded to the fourth layer; and a sixth or abuse layer, melt bonded to the fifth layer. An associated method for making the film is also provided that includes full coextrusion and selective irradiation and orientation.
