The present invention relates to articles comprising crosslinked polymer network comprising thioether crosslinks and process of making and using same. Such thiol-ene crosslinking reactions not only make the isocyanate crosslinking reaction unnecessary, but they also improve the article's strength due to chemical crosslinking between the article's resin layers, and reduce or eliminate post curing. Thus resulting in a sufficiently cured article in a much shorter time.

Articles comprising crosslinked polymer network comprising thioether crosslinks and process of making and using same

The present invention relates to processes for making macromolecular networks, macromolecular networks made by such processes, and methods of using such macromolecular networks. Such process employs a low amount of amine compound as a reaction accelerant. The rates of chemical reaction are thereby easily controlled over several orders of magnitude, permitting efficient catalysis and control of reaction conditions needed to produce thermochemically stable macromolecular networks.

Process for making macromolecular networks

A method of forming a hydrophobic and oleophobic surface. The method including spin coating an F-POSS with 3,3-dichloro-1,1,1,2,2,-pentafluoropropane/1,3-dichloro-1,1,2,2,3-pentafluoropropane onto an inert surface. The F-POSS has a structure:  Each Rrepresents a nonreactive, fluorinated organic group, Rrepresents a first monovalent organic group comprising at least two carbon atoms, and Rrepresents hydrogen or a second monovalent organic group comprising at least two carbon atoms. The F-POSS with 3,3-dichloro-1,1,1,2,2,-pentafluoropropane/1,3-dichloro-1,1,2,2,3-pentafluoropropane are then dried on the inert surface.

Synthesis of functional fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane ('F-POSS')

A method of manufacturing a fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane. The method for manufacture includes opening a single edge of a closed-cage F-POSS and bridging the opened, single edge with a sulfate group. The sulfate group is converted to a disilanol, which is then reacted with a functional dichlorosilane having an organic functional group comprising at least three carbon atoms.

Treated, mesoporous aggregates comprising a plurality of coated particles that comprise an inorganic oxide core having a surface area of about 50 to about 500 square meters per gram and a shell or coating consisting of an array of fluoroalkyl molecular chains covalently bonded to the core at a density of at least one chain per square nanometer. The aggregates are formed by the chemical attachment of fluoroalkyl-alkylsilanes after exposure to an alkylamine and followed by an extraction to remove any unbound organic material. The dense packing of molecular chains in the fluoroalkyl shell combined with a mesoporous structure imparts a very low surface energy, a very high specific surface area, and surface texture over a wide range of length scales. Such features are highly desirable for the creation of, for example, superhydrophobic and superoleophobic surfaces, separation media, and release films.

Fluoroalkylsilanated mesoporous metal oxide particles and methods of preparation thereof

Methods of synthesis and application thereof for peripherally aromatic silsesquioxanes featuring reactive functionality. A method, according to one embodiment of the invention, includes reacting a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane with an anhydride. The polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane has an inorganic core, a phenyl moiety or an anlyine moiety covalently coupled to the at least one T-type silicon atom; and a metal-aniline group or a para-aniline group covalently coupled to the at least one D-type or M-type silicon atom. The inorganic core includes 6-14 silicon atoms, at least one of the silicon atoms being an M-type silicon atom or a D-type silicon atom, and at least one of the silicon atoms being a T-type silicon atom, and 9-20 oxygen atoms.

Peripherally aromatic silsesquioxanes featuring reactive functionality: synthesis and application thereof

A thermosetting resin. The resin includes a silane and a co-reactant monomer. The silane includes a quaternary silicon atom with first and second non-hydrolyzable moieties chemically bonded thereto. Each of the first and second non-hydrolyzable moieties includes respective first and second reactive groups. The reactive groups include at least one aromatic or unsaturated group having a triple bond.

Thermosetting resins with enhanced cure characteristics containing organofunctional silane moieties

A functional fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane ('F-POSS'). The F-POSS, has a chemical structure: where Rrepresents a nonreactive organic group and at least one of Rand Rrepresents a chain comprising at least three carbon atoms.

Synthesis of functional fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (F-POSS)

A reactive, non-hydrolyzable silane. The silane comprises a quaternary silicon atom and first and second terminal groups. Each of the first and second terminal groups is chemically bonded to the quaternary silicon atom and is selected from a group consisting of cyanate ester, epoxide, episulfide, acrylate, alkene, styrenic, maleimide, phthalonitrile, acetylene, aryl ethynylene, benzoxazine, anthracene, aniline, trifluorovinyl ether, and perfluorocyclobutyl.

Novel POSS mono- and dianiline compounds, their synthesis procedures, and applications in host materials for the purposes of property enhancement are described. This class of POSS compounds features completely aromatic peripheries and partial amine functionality for facile and controlled reactive incorporation into a variety of polymers, and further utility may be derived from reactions of the available amine groups with anhydrides such as phenylethynyl phthalic anhydride (PEPA) to form reactive imide-type oligomers for incorporation into high performance thermosetting polymers. Modification of polymer hosts with the subject nanoparticles can result in a variety of property improvements including mechanical, thermal, tribological, electrical, as well as improved moisture resistance.

These particles are formed by the chemical attachment of fluoroalkyl-alkylsilanes after exposure to an alkylamine and followed by an extraction to remove any organic material not covalently bound. The dense packing of molecular chains in the fluoroalkyl shell combined with a mesoporous structure imparts a very low surface energy, a very high specific surface area, and surface texture over a wide range of length scales. Such features are highly desirable for the creation of, for example, superhydrophobic and superoleophobic surfaces, separation media, and release films.

Fluoroalkylsilane-treated metal oxide particles and a fluoroelastomeric binder are dispersed in a fluorinated solvent with a low boiling point and applied to a substrate via spray deposition. The spray deposition process rapidly produces a conformal coating that features low surface energy and surface topography with a large range of characteristic length scales and re-entrant curvature, thereby imparting superoleophobicity. The degree of superoleophobicity is readily adjusted by means of altering the ratio of particles to binder. The choice of particle and binder result in coatings with thermal stability for thousands of hours at temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius as well as desirable mechanical characteristics.

Sprayed on superoleophobic surface formulations

A. new compound, a high temperature POSS-dianiline is provided. It is a composition of nanoparticles, which can be incorporated into polymers such as polyimides, polyamides, cyanate esters, and epoxies, for improved properties and performance of such polymers.
