A storage stable one component aqueous basecoat composition containing a melamine formaldehyde crosslinker and a resin having groups reactive to the melamine formaldehyde crosslinker under acid catalysis is provided. The basecoat composition is curable at a temperature of 110&#xb0; C. or less when cured wet on wet with a solvent borne clear coat composition containing a polyisocyanate crosslinker. Also provided is a wet on wet two layer coating containing the one component aqueous basecoat and the solvent borne clear coat, a wet on wet three layer coating containing an aqueous primer, the one component aqueous basecoat and the solvent borne clear coat and a cured topcoat coating obtained by curing the wet on wet two layer coating.

Low temperature curing 1K basecoat and method to coat a substrate with the 1K basecoat

A double coating, curing method, cured coating, and kit are provided. A first layer of the double coating can be a first cure coating composition, which has a first hydroxy-functional resin, a first crosslinking agent, and a non-polar catalyst. A second layer of a second cure coating composition can have a second hydroxy-functional resin, a second crosslinking agent, and a polar catalyst. The non-polar catalyst catalyzes crosslinking between the second hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent, and not between the first hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent. The polar catalyst catalyzes crosslinking between the first hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent, and not between the second hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent. The polarity of the catalysts can facilitate catalyst migration from one layer to the other. The separate compositions can be shelf-stable and/or the curing can occur at low temperature.

Low temperature cure coating formed via polarity-facilitated catalyst migration between layers in a double layer curing mechanism

A double coating, curing method, cured coating, and kit are provided. A first layer of the double coating can be a first cure coating composition, which has a first hydroxy-functional resin, a first crosslinking agent, and a first catalyst. A second layer of a second cure coating composition can have a low hydrophilicity acrylic resin as a second hydroxy-functional resin, a second crosslinking agent, and a second catalyst. The first catalyst catalyzes crosslinking between the second hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent, and not between the first hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent. The second catalyst catalyzes crosslinking between the first hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent, and not between the second hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent. The first and/or second hydroxy functional resins can facilitate catalyst migration from one layer to the other. The separate compositions can be shelf-stable and/or the curing can occur at low temperature.

Low temperature cure coating formed via resin-facilitated catalyst migration between layers in a double layer curing mechanism

Shelf-stable low temperature cure coating compositions that include a hydroxy-functional resin, a crosslinking agent, and a catalyst that does not catalyze the crosslinking reaction between hydroxy-functional resin and the crosslinking agent contained therein, but instead between a hydroxy-functional resin and a crosslinking agent contained in a different low temperature cure coating composition. In addition, low temperature cure composite coatings that include: a basecoat of a low temperature cure coating composition containing a first hydroxy-functional resin, a first crosslinking agent, and a first catalyst; and a topcoat containing a second hydroxy-functional resin, a second crosslinking agent, and a second catalyst, where the first catalyst migrates into the topcoat from the basecoat and catalyzes the reaction between the second hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent, and the second catalyst migrates into the basecoat from the topcoat and catalyzes the reaction between the first hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent.

One component, low temperature cure coating formed via a double layer curing mechanism

Shelf-stable low temperature cure coating compositions that include a hydroxy-functional resin, a crosslinking agent, and a catalyst that does not catalyze the crosslinking reaction between hydroxy-functional resin and the crosslinking agent contained therein, but instead between a hydroxy-functional resin and a crosslinking agent contained in a different low temperature cure coating composition. In addition, low temperature cure composite coatings that include: a waterborne basecoat containing a first hydroxy-functional resin, a first crosslinking agent, a first catalyst, and an organic solvent; and a solventborne topcoat containing a second hydroxy-functional resin, a second crosslinking agent, a second catalyst, and water, where the first catalyst migrates into the topcoat from the basecoat and catalyzes the reaction between the second hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent, and the second catalyst migrates into the basecoat from the topcoat and catalyzes the reaction between the first hydroxy-functional resin and crosslinking agent.

Low temperature cure coating formed via a double layer curing mechanism of a pigmented waterborne baselayer and a solventborne top layer

Described is a high solids coating composition having exceptional rheological properties and appearances comprising (a) a thermosetting binder, (b) from about 0.1 to about 10 wt. % based on binder solids of solid polyurea particles prepared by the reaction of a mixture of a polyisocyanate and an amino reactant comprising a primary or secondary monoamine that optionally has a hydroxyl or ether group or both, and (c) from about 5 to about 20 wt. % based on binder solids of a cellulose mixed ester having a number average molecular weight of from about 1000 to about 5600, a polydispersity of from about 1.2 to about 3.5, and a total degree of substitution per anhydroglucose unit of from about 3.08 to about 3.5.
