Systems for examining a route inject one or more electrical examination signals into a conductive route from onboard a vehicle system traveling along the route, detect one or more electrical characteristics of the route based on the one or more electrical examination signals, and detect a break in conductivity of the route responsive to the one or more electrical characteristics decreasing by more than a designated drop threshold for a time period within a designated drop time period. Feature vectors may be determined for the electrical characteristics and compared to one or more patterns in order to distinguish between breaks in the conductivity of the route and other causes for changes in the electrical characteristics.

Route examining system and method

A method for controlling a vehicle system includes controlling a vehicle system having powered units that propel the vehicle system. A trip plan directs at least one of the powered units to remain in a non-propulsion generating mode during the trip. The method further includes slowing and/or stopping the vehicle system in contravention to the first trip plan, activating the at least one of the powered units out of the non-propulsion generating mode into an active, propulsion-generating mode when the vehicle system accelerates after the at least one of slowing or stopping in contravention to the first trip plan, and switching the at least one of the powered units back to the non-propulsion generating mode after the vehicle system achieves a designated speed following accelerating after the at least one of the slowing or stopping of the vehicle system in contravention to the first trip plan.

Control system and method for remotely isolating powered units in a vehicle system

A system includes a vehicle control module, an operating information module, and a fuel analysis module. The vehicle control module is configured to obtain a trip plan for the vehicle. The operating information module is configured to be disposed on-board the vehicle and to autonomously obtain operating information describing one or more of tractive events or braking events performed during the trip. The fuel analysis module is configured to be disposed on-board the vehicle, to receive the operating information from the operating information module, and to autonomously determine a fuel consumption for at least a portion of the trip using the operating information received from the operating information module.
