A method for treating a porous item constructed of metal powder, such as a powder made of Series 400 stainless steel, involves a step of preheating the porous item to a temperature of between about 700 and 900&#xb0; C. degrees in an oxidizing atmosphere and then sintering the body in an inert or reducing atmosphere at a temperature which is slightly below the melting temperature of the metal which comprises the porous item. The thermal stability of the resulting item is enhanced by this method so that the item retains its porosity and metallic characteristics, such as ductility, at higher (e.g. near-melting) temperatures.

An internal current collector for use inside a tubular solid oxide fuel cell (TSOFC) electrode comprises a tubular coil spring disposed concentrically within a TSOFC electrode and in firm uniform tangential electrical contact with the electrode inner surface. The current collector maximizes the contact area between the current collector and the electrode. The current collector is made of a metal that is electrically conductive and able to survive under the operational conditions of the fuel cell, i.e., the cathode in air, and the anode in fuel such as hydrogen, CO, CO, HO or HS.

The ceramic part comprises: an insulating layer affixed to a substrate wherein the insulating layer comprising AlOparticles; and a glass comprising about 45 to about 69 mole percent SiO, 0 to about 9 mole percent BO, 0 to about 26 mole percent AlO, 0 and 25 mole percent SrO, and about 10 to about 26 mole percent REO, where REOis selected from the group consisting of YO, three valent rare earth oxides, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing. In one embodiment of a ceramic part, a gas sensor comprises: an electrolyte layer having disposed on opposite sides thereof a first electrode and a second electrode; and an insulating layer that is in intimate contact with the second electrode, wherein the insulating layer comprises alumina and frit. The method of making the gas sensor comprises: disposing a first electrode and a second electrode on opposite sides of an electrolyte layer; forming an insulating layer comprising alumina and frit; disposing the insulating layer adjacent to the second electrode to form a green sensor; and heating the green sensor to a temperature sufficient to sinter the electrolyte layer and the insulating layer.

The present invention is a glass-ceramic material and method of making useful for joining a solid ceramic component and at least one other solid component. The material is a blend of M1-M2-M3, wherein M1 is BaO, SrO, CaO, MgO, or combinations thereof, M2 is Al O , present in the blend in an amount from 2 to 15 mol %, M3 is SiO with up to 50 mol % B O that substantially matches a coefficient of thermal expansion of the solid electrolyte. According to the present invention, a series of glass ceramics in the M1-Al O -M3 system can be used to join or seal both tubular and planar solid oxide fuel cells, oxygen electrolyzers, and membrane reactors for the production of syngas, commodity chemicals and other products.
