A method for making a multilayered paper-containing product, for example a paper plate or tray, includes assembling two or more sheets of paper-containing material cut into blanks. The blanks are pressed together and shaped in a die, usually with a bonding agent being used to secure the blanks. Pleats are formed in the curved portion of the shaped product. However, the pleats on each blank are formed independently so that the folded region formed in the pleats are arranged in a staggered array and are not interleaved with the pleats of the other blank.

The present invention provides a container () suitable for providing insulation wherein the container has an inner shrink film () liner. The sidewalls of the container, which can be made from paperboard or other suitable material, are vented to allow ambient air to freely flow through the sidewall of the container during activation of the shrink film () with hot liquid or other suitable material. When the container is filled with material having a temperature of from about 130&#xb0; F. to up to about 212&#xb0; F., the shrink film () is activated and the container () provides excellent insulation, thereby allowing the container to be held in a consumer's hand for an extended period without causing burns or excessive discomfort. Method of making this container () are also provided.

A container comprising a sidewall and an inner liner. The inner liner includes an intermediate portion affixed to the sidewall about a periphery of the intermediate portion. The sidewall includes a vent disposed within the periphery of the intermediate portion. The intermediate portion is adapted to separate from the sidewall such that ambient air flows through the vent to form an air pocket between the intermediate portion of the inner liner and the sidewall.

An improved paperboard has been bulk enhanced by retaining a substantial portion of bulk-enhanced additives including expandable microspheres in a suitable distribution within the paperboard. The cellulosic paperboard web has an overall fiber weight (w) of at least 40 lbs. per 3000 square feet and, at a fiber density of 3, 4.5, 6.5, 7, 8.3, and 9 pounds per 3000 square foot ream at a fiberboard thickness of 0.001 inches, has a GM Taber stiffness of at least about 0.00246 wgrams-centimeter/fiber mat density, and a GM tensile stiffness of at least about 615+13.18 w pounds per inch. The high retention of the bulk enhancing additives is believed to result from the incorporation of suitable retention aids. The resulting paperboard has better GM Taber stiffness values and GM tensile stiffness than prior art paperboards. The paperboard also has increased strain to failure and is able to be formed into suitable paperboard containers without loss of integrity. The resulting containers have increased hold times when they contain hot or cold food or drink.

Coated paperboards and paperboard containers having improved tactile and bulk insulation properties

A method of making a texture-coated and/or insulation coated container from a flat paperboard blank in which a heat-hardenable liquid polymeric binder texturizing and or insulating agent coating mixture is applied to one surface of the blank in a pattern of covered and open areas. This coating mixture is subjected to heat to cure the polymeric binder and expand the texturizing and/or insulating agent, optionally treated with moisture, and optionally heated to form the blank into the shape of a container, and the container produced by this method. The containers such as cups, plates, etc., are useful in food service. These containers have a coefficient of static friction which is about 0.2 to 2.0 and over and a kinetic coefficient of friction which is about 0.22 to 1.5.

The present invention provides a cup less likely to leak by forming a u-shaped channel about a periphery of a bottom blank, forming a top blank into a generally cylindrical shape, and coupling an edge of the top blank to the u-shaped channel of the bottom blank.

An apparatus for applying a high solids coating to a surface of a base product is provided. The apparatus includes a rotatable coating roll that opposes a feeding roll. The rolls combine to define a nip portion through which a base product is passed. A method of applying a coating to a surface of a base product that includes providing a calender stack that includes a rotatable king roll and a feeding roll is provided. A paperboard container and method of forming such container having a rolled brim is disclosed. The container being formed of a paperboard material having a caliper of at least approximately 0.007 inches, a rolled brim arc length of less than about 0.25 inches, an outer radius of curvature of the container cut through the plane normal to the axis of the rolled brim arc length adjacent the rolled brim being less than approximately 1.5 inches with the paperboard material forming the container having at least approximately 8 lbs/3,000 ft.sup.2 ream of size press adhesive included therein and preferably approximately 13 lbs/3,000 ft.sup.2 ream of paperboard material. One particular container includes dimensions wherein the outer radius of curvature of the container cut through the plane normal to the axis of the rolled brim arc length adjacent the rolled brim is approximately 1.25 inches while an inner radius of curvature of the container cut through the plane normal to the axis of the rolled brim arc length adjacent the rolled brim is at least 1.09 inches. Such a container is formed by initially providing a paperboard shell formed from a paperboard blank having an unfinished annular exposed edge; directing the unfinished annular edge into a forming surface of a forming die; urging the unfinished annular edge into the forming die and controlling an initial buckling point of the unfinished annular edge of the paperboard shell such that a substantially defect free prolate rolled toroidal brim is formed. Such a container may also include a styrene-acrylic primer coating to significantly improve bonding between the paperboard material and a polymer outer coating.
