Foldable apparatus comprise a foldable substrate foldable about an axis and a substrate thickness defined between a first major surface and a second major surface. The foldable substrate comprises a central portion positioned between a first portion and a second portion. The first portion comprising a substrate thickness. The central portion comprises a central thickness that is less than the substrate thickness. In some embodiments, a width of central portion is about 45 millimeters or less. Methods of making a foldable apparatus comprise forming a recess in a first major surface of the foldable substrate. In some embodiments, methods comprise chemically strengthening the foldable substrate.

A glass element having a thickness from 25 μm to 125 μm, a first primary surface, a second primary surface, and a compressive stress region extending from the first primary surface to a first depth, the region defined by a compressive stress σI of at least about 100 MPa at the first primary surface. Further, the glass element has a stress profile such that it does not fail when it is subject to 200,000 cycles of bending to a target bend radius of from 1 mm to 20 mm, by the parallel plate method. Still further, the glass element has a puncture resistance of greater than about 1.5 kgf when the first primary surface of the glass element is loaded with a tungsten carbide ball having a diameter of 1.5 mm.

An automotive display module can include a mounting bracket, a display panel, a cover substrate, and a frame member. The mounting bracket can be securable to a component of an automobile. The display panel can be coupled to the mounting bracket and the frame member can be connected to a back side of the cover substrate.

A glass composition includes: from 55.0 mol % to 70.0 mol % SiO; from 12.0 mol % to 20.0 mol % AlO; from 5.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % LiO; and from 4.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % NaO. The glass composition has the following relationships −8.00 mol %≤RO+RO−AlO−BO−PO≤−1.75 mol %, 9.00≤(SiO+AlO+LiO)/NaO, and (LiO+AlO+PO)/(NaO+BO)≤3.50. The glass composition may be used in a glass article or a consumer electronic product.

Glasses with low excess modifier content

The disclosure relates to glass compositions with high coefficients of thermal expansion and low fracture toughness designed for thermal tempering. These glasses are ideally suited to produce a 'dicing' pattern when thermally tempered, even when thin (<3 mm). Disclosed glasses have high thermal expansions at low and high temperatures to produce increased temper stresses once quenched, coupled with low fracture toughness which promotes crack bifurcation and enhanced frangibility. Methods of making such glasses are also provided.

Non-iox glasses with high coefficient of thermal expansion and preferential fracture behavior for thermal tempering

Glass-based articles that include a reduced Young's modulus layer extending from a surface of the glass-based article to a depth of layer and an optional compressive stress layer extending from a surface of the glass-based article to a depth of compression are formed by exposing glass-based substrates to water vapor containing environments. The methods of forming the glass-based articles may include elevated pressures and/or multiple exposures to water vapor containing environments. The glass-based articles may be utilized in foldable or flexible electronic devices.

Glass compositions and strengthened glass laminate articles comprising the same

A method of manufacturing a strengthened glass article includes forming a glass-to-glass laminate by fusing clad and core glasses, where the clad has greater high-temperature coefficient of thermal expansion (HTCTE) than the core but a lesser low-temperature coefficient of thermal expansion (LTCTE). The method includes cooling the laminate to impart stresses through contraction mismatch between the clad and core, where stresses in the laminate from HTCTE differences at least partially offset stresses in the laminate from LTCTE. After the cooling, the method includes modifying geometry of the laminate, then relaxing at least some of the stresses in the glass-to-glass laminate from differences in the HTCTE.

Glass laminate articles

Alkali aluminosilicate glasses that are resistant to damage due to sharp impact and capable of fast ion exchange are provided. The glasses comprise at least 4 mol % POand, when ion exchanged, have a Vickers indentation crack initiation load of at least about 7 kgf.

Embodiments of a method for pair bending glass articles is provided herein. In the method, a first glass article and a second glass article are stacked to form a stack. The first glass article includes a first surface, a second surface that opposes the first surface, and a first composition having first annealing and softening temperatures. The second glass article includes a third surface, a fourth surface that opposes the third surface, and a second composition having second annealing and softening temperatures. The annealing temperatures are within 35° C. of each other and are at least 550° C. The softening temperatures are within 35° C. of each other and are at least 750° C. In the method, the stack is placed on a mold, and the stack is heated to a sagging temperature such that a shaped stack is formed.

Glass compositions for use in co-formed laminates

Embodiments of glass compositions, glass articles and chemically strengthened glass articles are disclosed. In one or more embodiments, the glass composition comprises LiO, greater than about 0.9 mol % BO, AlOin an amount greater than or equal to 10 mol %, and from about 60 mol % to about 80 mol % SiO. Embodiments of the chemically strengthened glass article include a first major surface and an opposing second major surface defining a thickness t, a compressive stress layer extending from the first major surface to a depth of compression greater than about 0.12 t, a maximum compressive stress of about 200 MPa or greater, and a Knoop Lateral Cracking Scratch Threshold greater than about 6 N, as measured on either one of the first major surface and the second major surface. Methods for forming such chemically strengthened glass articles are also disclosed.

Fracture and scratch resistant glass articles

Glass-based articles comprise stress profiles providing improved fracture resistance. The glass-based articles herein provide high fracture resistance after multiple drops.

Fracture resistant stress profiles in glasses

A glass-based article including a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface defining a thickness (t) of about 3 millimeters or less (e.g., about 1 millimeter or less), and a stress profile, wherein all points of the stress profile between a thickness range from about 0·t up to 0.3·t and from greater than about 0.7·t to t, comprise a tangent with a slope having an absolute value greater than about 0.1 MPa/micrometer. In some embodiments, the glass-based article includes a non-zero metal oxide concentration that varies along at least a portion of the thickness (e.g., 0·t to about 0.3·t) and a maximum central tension of less than about 71.5/√(t) (MPa). In some embodiments, the concentration of metal oxide or alkali metal oxide decreases from the first surface to a point between the first surface and the second surface and increases from the point to the second surface. The concentration of the metal oxide may be about 0.05 mol % or greater or about 0.5 mol % or greater throughout the thickness. Methods for forming such glass-based articles are also disclosed.

Fusion-formable glass-based articles including a metal oxide concentration gradient

A glass composition includes from 55.0 mol % to 75.0 mol % SiO; from 8.0 mol % to 20.0 mol % AlO; from 3.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % LiO; from 5.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % NaO; and less than or equal to 1.5 mol % KO. The glass composition has the following relationships: AlO+LiO is greater than 22.5 mol %, RO+RO is greater than or equal to 18.0 mol %, RO/AlOis greater than or equal to 1.06, SiO+AlO+BO+POis greater than or equal to 78.0 mol %, and (SiO+AlO+BO+PO)/LiO is greater than or equal to 8.0. The glass composition may be used in a glass article or a consumer electronic product.
