The invention comprises system and method for offloading a processor tasked with calendar processing of channel status information. The method comprises multiplexing channel status information received from a plurality of physical interfaces; grouping the channels based on bandwidth; comparing current and previous status information of a group of channels in a first memory; sending current channel status to the processor only if the status of any of the channels in the group has changed; and periodically synchronizing channel status information in the first memory to status information in the processor's memory. The system comprises: multiplexer to combine channel status information received from the interfaces and means for grouping, based on bandwidth, the channels; hardware assist engine to send current channel status to the processor only if channel status has changed; and device to synchronize channel status information in the hardware assist engine to status information in the processor's memory.

System and method for offloading a processor tasked with calendar processing

A technique for performing address translation that requires less logic and programming than conventional address translation techniques is described. The technique uses a CAM to perform address translation. The CAM is configured such that it contains key values that are representative of the address values to be translated. Associated with these key values are data values that representative of the translated address value. The address to be translated is applied to the CAM and if a matching key value is found, the data associated with the key value is output by the CAM.

A system schedules both CBR and non-CBR traffic on one or more virtual paths in accordance with associated aggregate peak cell rates by including in a stream of data cells strategically placed &ldquo;CBR opportunity cells.&rdquo; The CBR opportunity calls, which operate essentially as placeholders for the insertion of the CBR cells produced by a conventional AAL1 segmentation and reassembly processor (SAR), are included in the stream at locations that correspond to or exceed the fastest rate at which the associated CBR cells are generated. An add/drop multiplexer queues the CBR cells produced by the AAL1 SAR by virtual path, and replaces the respective CBR opportunity cells in the VBR stream with the queued CBR cells associated with the same virtual path.
