An electric arc welding system for depositing weld metal along a groove between two edges of a metal workpiece where the system contains a first power supply and a second power supply, each providing a welding waveform to respective welding electrodes. The positive output terminals of both power supplies are coupled to the same contact tip and the negative output terminal of one of the power supplies is not coupled to the workpiece.

Modified series arc welding and improved control of one sided series arc welding

An electric arc welder for depositing weld metal along a groove between two edges of a metal workpiece. The welder comprises: a leading electrode driven toward a point in the groove by a first wire feeder operated at a first speed by a first motor with a speed control input and a tachometer derived first feedback signal, a trailing electrode driven toward the same point by a second wire feeder operated at a second speed by a second motor with a speed control input and a tachometer derived second feedback signal, a first power source directing a first current to flow through the leading electrode and a second power source causing a second current to flow through the trailing electrode with the current flow being in a series arc circuit. The second power source being grounded to the workpiece to modify the series arc current so ground current flows to the workpiece whereby the second current is generally equal to the first current minus the ground current.

Series arc welder

A system and method is provided in which at least two welding power supplies are coupled to respective weld torches where the power supplies each provide a pulse welding waveform to their respective weld torches such that the welding pulses are out of phase with each other such that the respective welding pulses do not overlap during welding. The system also includes a ground current switch which switches the ground current path during welding to minimize arc interference and arc blow.

Tandem buried arc welding

A system for arc welding two sides of a joint simultaneously is disclosed. By customizing welding waveforms and the distance between two or more electrodes, weld currents can be designed to transfer current to and through one or more electrodes in addition to the current traditionally passed only to the common node.

An electric arc welder for depositing weld metal along a groove between two edges of a metal workpiece where the welder comprises a first electrode driven by a first wire feeder toward a point in said groove, a second electrode driven by a second wire feeder toward the point and a main power source with a first output terminal connected to the first electrode and a second output terminal connected both to the second electrode and directly or indirectly to the metal workpiece to create a second electrode path and a workpiece path. The power source includes a high speed switching output stage for creating current with a selected AC waveform between the first and second output terminals where the waveform of the main power source is generated by a waveform generator controlling a pulse width modulator circuit to determine the current operation of the output stage.

Electric arc welder () performs a given weld process with selected current waveform performed between electrode () and workpiece (). Welder () includes a controller with a digital processor (), sensor () for reading instantaneous weld current, and circuit () to convert the instantaneous current into a digital representation of the level of instantaneous weld current. Digital processor () has program circuit () to periodically read and square the digital representation at a given rate, register () for summing a number N of square digital representations to give a summed value, and an algorithm () for periodically dividing the summed value by the number N to provide a quotient and then taking the square root of said quotient to thereby digitally construct rms signal () representing the root mean square of the weld current.

Electric arc welder and method for controlling the welding process of the welder

Welders and methods are presented for short-circuit arc welding a workpiece using a modified series arc welding configuration with two electrodes via a sequence of welding cycles, in which each cycle includes an arc condition a short-circuit condition, wherein one or both electrode currents are selectively reversed during a reverse boost portion of the welding cycle to transfer molten metal from the second electrode to the first electrode prior to a short-circuit condition of a subsequent welding cycle.

Pipe seam tack welding methods and apparatus using modified series arc welding

An operating system is provided for an electric arc welder including a high switching speed inverter power source for creating an arc voltage and arc current between an electrode and a workpiece. This operating system regulating the arc voltage to provide a voltage with a slope by using an error circuit to create an error output and having a first input with a signal representing the set voltage and a second input representing the sum of the actual arc voltage and the actual arc current multiplied by a slope constant. A DSP program reduces the error output by adjusting the voltage output of the inverter power source to change the actual arc voltage. The slope constant is in the range of 0&#x2013;10%.
