Methods for providing flow control of signal streams over a single full duplex ETHERNET link include receiving multiple data streams over a single ETHERNET link, associating a buffer with each data stream, putting received data into the appropriate buffer, monitoring the fullness of the buffers, and transmitting a PAUSE frame to the source of the data streams where the PAUSE frame indicates the fullness of each buffer. The PAUSE frame is read and where indicated, the transmission of data destined for a congested buffer(s) is halted until a subsequent PAUSE frame is received which indicates that the congested buffer(s) has become decongested. Apparatus for performing the methods are also provided.

Methods and apparatus for controlling the flow of multiple signal sources over a single full duplex ethernet link

An apparatus for fast failure switch over in an ETHERNET switch includes redundant switch (trunk) ports (a main and a backup) and hardware and software logic for redirecting traffic to the backup port when the main port (or the link associated with it) fails. The switchover is immediate and is based on the content of a local status register which indicates the port (link) status. Thus, frames addressed to the dead port are redirected to the backup port and few frames are lost. The STP function may proceed concurrently and eventually no more frames are addressed to the dead port.

The methods of the present invention are compatible with a CellBus&#xae; system operating in either 16-client mode or 32-client mode.

An apparatus for avoiding head of line blocking in an ATM device includes a scheduler, at least one multicast queue, at least one unicast queue, a multicast session table, a multicast timer, and a problem PHY vector. The methods of the invention include alternate scheduling between multicast queue(s) and unicast queue(s). If a PHY device in a multicast session is inactive, it is skipped and the next PHY in the session is serviced. When the session has serviced all of the active PHYs and there remain only inactive PHYs in the session table, the session is ended. Preferably, a timer is started when only inactive PHYs remain in a session and the session is ended when the timer expires, if not sooner. Preferably, a problem PHY vector is maintained and updated at the end of each multicast session and when PHYs become active. The problem PHY vector includes a list of all of the presently inactive PHYs. The multicast session is preferably ended when the only PHYs remaining in the session are listed in the problem PHY vector.
