The present invention relates to a process to prepare alkyl (meth)acrylate esters from corresponding alkyl/methacrylate esters using an alkali metal alkoxide as an ester interchange catalyst to produce an alkyl (meth)acrylate ester monomer product C ##STR1## The present invention further relates to the use of bromide and iodide salts as free radical polymerization inhibitors. The present invention further relates to the use of a noninterfering alcohol or polyol that prevents anionic polymerization reactions of reactant ester B and/or alkyl (meth)acrylate product C. The present invention further relates to a process for inhibiting polymerization of (meth)acrylates being synthesized in a transesterification or ester-ester interchange reaction system.

Acrylate monomer preparation using alkali metal alkoxides as ester

Disclosed is a microcavity organic light emitter having reduced variation in emission spectra per change in viewing angle. In an illustrative embodiment, a microcavity EL device comprises a microcavity layer structure stacked on a symmetric, non-planar surface of a substrate. The microcavity layer structure includes at least a first reflective layer on the non-planar substrate surface, a second reflective layer and an active layer having organic material capable of electroluminescence between the first and second reflective layers. The non-planar surface may be a shallow cone, frustum, a dome-like surface, or a combination thereof.

Wavelength compensation for resonant cavity electroluminescent devices

For use in the display screen of a teleconferencing system, a shutter capable of assuming alternative transparent and scattering states and a method of manufacture therefor. In one embodiment, the shutter includes a film of a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) composition of a polymer and a liquid crystal material wherein the liquid crystal material makes up about 78% by weight of the film. The film is cured at a temperature ranging from about 32.degree. C. to about 38.degree. C., thereby decreasing the time it takes for the film to switch between the transparent and scattering states. The shutter further includes first and second layers of a transparent conductor for containing the film therebetween and driver circuitry, coupled to the film, for causing the film to have a response time equal to or less than 8 ms.

Fast transition polymer dispersed liquid crystal shutter for display

Optical microcavities are potentially useful as light emitters for, e.g., flat panel displays. Such microcavities comprise a layer structure, including two spaced apart reflectors that define the cavity, with a layer or layers of organic (electroluminescent) material disposed between the reflectors. We have discovered that a microcavity can simultaneously emit radiation of two or more predetermined colors such that the emission has a desired apparent color, exemplarily white. Emission of two or more colors requires that the effective optical length of the cavity is selected such that the cavity is a multimode cavity, with the wavelengths of two or more of the standing wave modes that are supported by the cavity lying within the emission region of the electroluminescence spectrum of the active material. A particular embodiment with two organic emitting (active) layers is disclosed.

Article comprising a microcavity light source

An ergonomically improved, reduced size keyboard having a QWERTY keyboard layout allows maintenance of the same typing speed and accuracy associated with conventional keyboards. In one embodiment, the keys of the keyboard are divided into two sections, the sections being arranged to form a V-shape such that the centermost key in each row of each section approximately contacts the centermost key of the corresponding row in the other section. The V-shaped key layout allows the keyboard to maintain nearly all of the interkey spacing of a full-size keyboard while reducing overall keyboard width. The V-shaped key layout also alleviates wrist and finger strain that may otherwise occur during prolonged use of a keyboard. In another embodiment, further ergonomic improvement and size reduction of the keyboard is obtained by arcing each row of keys. Keys not on the row of home row keys are placed in the same positions relative to home row keys as found on a standard QWERTY keyboard. As a result, typists may switch easily between standard QWERTY keyboards and the keyboard according to the invention. A keyboard with a V-shaped keyboard layout and arced key rows according to the invention has a width 22.7% smaller than a typical full-size keyboard, while maintaining 95% of the interkey spacing. This keyboard according to the invention also has approximately the same width as a comparable reduced size keyboard, while increasing interkey spacing 18.75%.

Ergonomically condensed QWERTY keyboard

Applicants have discovered an improved photodefined dielectric materials comprising poly(aromatic diacetylenes). The preferred poly(aromatic diacetylenes) are copolymers of aromatic diacetylenes. Specific examples are 1) a copolymer of 4,4'-diethynyldiphenyl ether and m-diethynyl benzene and 2) a copolymer of 4,4'-diethynyldiphenyl ether and 4,4'-bis(3-ethynylphenoxy)-2,2',3,3',5,5',6,6'-octafluorobiphenyl. These copolymers can be photochemically crosslinked in patterns with exposure of 30 mJ/cm.sup.2 .mu.m and 60 mJ/cm.sup.2 .mu.m, respectively, and patterns have been produced in 10 .mu.m thick films with features as small as 12 .mu.m.

Photodefinable dielectric layers comprising poly(aromatic diacetylenes)

Applicants have discovered an improved photodefined dielectric materials comprising poly(aromatic diacetylenes). The preferred poly(aromatic diacetylenes) are copolymers of aromatic diacetylenes. Specific examples are 1) a copolymer of 4,4'-diethynyldiphenyl ether and m-diethynyl benzene and 2) a copolymer of 4,4'-diethynyldiphenyl ether and 4,4'-bis(3-ethynylphenoxy)-2,2',3,3',5,5',6,6'-octaflurorbiphenyl. These copolymers can be photochemically crosslinked in patterns with exposure of 30 mJ/cm.sup.2 .mu.m and 60 mJ/cm.sup.2 .mu.m, respectively, and patterns have been produced in 10 .mu.m thick films with features as small as 12 .mu.m.

Apparatus according to the invention comprises at least two optical microcavity light emitters. Each one of the at least two light emitters comprises spaced apart reflectors that define a microcavity, and further comprises organic material that is capable of electro-luminescence (e.g., tris (8-hydroxyquinolinol) aluminum, commonly referred to as 'Alq'), and means for applying an electric field across the organic material. One of the at least two microcavities has effective optical length L.sub.1, and the other microcavity has effective optical length L.sub.2 .noteq.L.sub.1, with the optical lengths selected such that one of the microcavities emits radiation of a first color (e.g., red), and the other microcavity emits radiation of a second color (e.g., green). In many cases there will be present also a third microcavity that emits radiation of a third color (e.g., blue). In preferred embodiments there is present within the microcavities a filler layer, of thickness selected to provide to a given microcavity the desired optical length. A preferred embodiment of the invention is a full color flat panel display that comprises many pixels, each pixel comprising at least three different microcavity emitters. Other contemplated embodiments are a LED printer, an optical interconnect and an optical fiber communication system.
