Disclosed herein are systems and methods for ion exchanging glass articles. Methods for ion exchanging glass articles include receiving processing instructions from one or more user input devices, loading a cassette containing a plurality of glass articles into a molten salt bath of one or more ion exchange stations automatically with a robotic lift based on the processing instructions, removing the cassette from the molten salt bath automatically with the robotic lift after a predetermined time based on the processing instructions, and rotating the cassette automatically to drain fluid of the molten salt bath from the cassette.

Systems and methods for ion exchanging glass articles

A method of forming an optical communication cable is provided. The cable includes a core element located in a cable jacket. The core element includes a buffer tube having an outer surface, an inner surface and a channel defined by the inner surface of the first tube. The core element includes an optical fiber located within the channel of the buffer tube and a color layer formed from a surface-deposited colorant material applied to the outer surface of the buffer tube.

A method for making low PMD fiber comprising the steps of: (i) making an initial fiber preform; (ii) modifying said initial fiber preform to introduce higher birefringence than that of the initial fiber preform into modified preform; and (iii) drawing an optical fiber from the modified preform and bi-directionally spinning the drawn fiber during draw.

Ultra low PMD fibers and method of making

A method for screening fiber polarization mode dispersion using a polarization optical time domain reflectometer. A pulse radiation is emitted into the fiber under test, and the backscattered radiation is measured by the POTDR and used to obtain a POTDR trace. A composite trace of more than one POTDR trace is obtained. The composite trace is then analyzed to compare the variation of signals along the length of the fiber, the variation in signals relating to the level of PMD along the length of the fiber. Because high levels of PMD correspond to localized levels of low variability, by setting the variability of signal threshold sufficiently low, fibers having unacceptably high localized PMD can be identified and removed.

A method for screening fiber polarization mode dispersion using a polarization optical time domain reflectometer. Improved single-mode optical waveguide fibers having a central core region, surrounded by an inner cladding region through which light at a chosen signal wavelength will propagate to an appreciable degree along with propagation of same in the central core region, the inner core region further surrounded by an outer cladding region, the improvement comprising germanium dioxide in the inner cladding region at a concentration within the range of about 0.005 percent by weight to about 1 percent by weight of said inner cladding region, effective to significantly reduce the concentration of oxygen atoms in the inner cladding region which are available to form defects that cause hydrogen-induced attenuation. Also provided are core preforms, overclad preforms, and processes for making the fibers, core preforms and overclad preforms.
