A jarring device includes a housing, a mandrel received within the housing, and a pressure chamber defined between the housing and the mandrel and filled with a hydraulic fluid. A hydraulic lock piston is arranged about the mandrel and radially interposes the housing and the mandrel. The hydraulic lock piston includes a pressure piston having a first end exposed to the pressure chamber, a second end, and first and second fluid flowpaths defined in the pressure piston and extending axially between the first and second ends. When the mandrel moves in a first direction relative to the housing, the hydraulic fluid is metered through the first fluid flowpath and the second fluid flowpath is occluded. When the mandrel moves in a second direction relative to the housing and opposite the first direction, the hydraulic fluid is metered through the second fluid flowpath and the first fluid flowpath is occluded.

A method and apparatus for removing debris from a wellbore using a cleaning tool. The tool may comprise an inner mandrel and a cup member coupled to the inner mandrel. The cup member is moveable between a collapsed position where fluid may flow across the exterior of the cup member, and an extended position where fluid is diverted into a flow path disposed between the inner mandrel and the cup member. The fluid is diverted through a filter member that is coupled to the inner mandrel below the cup member.

Downhole debris retriever

A method of drilling a wellbore includes drilling the wellbore by injecting drilling fluid through a drill string extending into the wellbore from surface and rotating a drill bit of the drill string. The drill string further includes a circulation sub having a port closed during drilling. The drilling fluid exits the drill bit and carries cuttings from the drill bit. The drilling fluid and cuttings (returns) flow to the surface via an annulus formed between an outer surface of the tubular string and an inner surface of the wellbore. The method further includes after drilling at least a portion of the wellbore: halting drilling; sending a wireless instruction signal from the surface to a downhole portion of the drill string by articulating the drill string, acoustic signal, or mud pulse, thereby opening the port; and injecting drilling fluid through the drill string and into the annulus via the open port.

A method and apparatus for circulating fluid in a wellbore includes a bottom sub having a bottom sub port and a mandrel, wherein the mandrel substantially forms an inner bore of the circulating tool and includes a mandrel port. The circulating tool may also include an activation piston that is movable in a first direction and a port piston movable in a second direction when the activation piston moves in the first direction. The circulating tool may further include an inner sleeve coupled to the port piston and movable with the port piston, the inner sleeve having an inner sleeve port in selective communication with the mandrel port. When the inner sleeve port is in communication with the mandrel port at least partially, circulating fluid is allowed to flow through the bottom sub port to the wellbore.

Multi-cycle circulating tool

A holding member provides for releasably positioning a rotating control head assembly in a subsea housing. The holding member engages an internal formation in the subsea housing to resist movement of the rotating control head assembly relative to the subsea housing. The rotating control head assembly is sealed with the subsea housing when the holding member engages the internal formation. An extendible portion of the holding member assembly extrudes an elastomer between an upper portion and a lower portion of the internal housing to seal the rotating control head assembly with the subsea housing. Pressure relief mechanisms release excess pressure in the subsea housing and a pressure compensation mechanism pressurize bearings in the bearing assembly at a predetermined pressure.

The present invention generally provides a downhole tool with an improved means of transmitting data to and from the tool through the use of wired pipe capable of transmitting a signal and/or power between the surface of the well and any components in a drill string. In one aspect, a downhole tool includes a body, and a mandrel disposed in the body and movable in relation to the body. A conducive wire runs the length of the body and permits signals and/or power to be transmitted though the body as the tool changes its length.

Methods and apparatus to control downhole tools

A wellbore mill has been invented having a flexible main body, and at least one milling apparatus secured on the flexible main body. A wellbore mill has been invented having a main body with a top end and a bottom end, at least one milling structure on the mill body, and a stinger projecting down from and releasably secured to the bottom end of the mill body. Methods have been invented for milling wellbore tubulars with such mills. A method for eliminating tubular offset in a wellbore has been invented, and the method includes positioning a wellbore mill in a tubular offset of a tubular string in a wellbore, the wellbore mill comprising a flexible main body and at least one milling apparatus secured on the flexible main body, and rotating the wellbore mill to mill at least part of the tubular offset.

Flexible wellbore mill

A jar up, bump down hydraulic drilling jar is described. A hydraulic tripping valve arrangement permits the storage of large amounts of static force before releasing a hammer to strike an anvil surface with substantial force. The hammer is positioned on the mandrel and interacts with the anvil surface in the housing to deliver upward jarring forces, to the drill string. During a downward jarring movement, the tripping valve is opened to prevent pressure buildup and accidental downward jarring; thus, a single-acting drilling jar is formed.

The present invention, in certain embodiments, discloses a whipstock system which is hydraulically settable in a tubular or wellbore and mechanically retrievable. In one aspect it is a 'through-tubing' system. In certain aspects systems according to this invention have a concave to a lower end of which is secured an anchor housing bendable member, movable connection, or with an anchor body therein that is in fluid communication, via a flexible hose within the anchor housing, with a fluid channel running through the concave. An upper end of a mandrel is housed in a recess in the anchor body. The mandrel's lower end may extend out from the anchor housing. A setting slip is disposed below the anchor body within an opening in the anchor housing. A pusher sleeve below the slip is selectively displaced up by a piston below the pusher sleeve to push the slip out from the opening in the anchor housing to set against an interior of a tubular or of a wellbore. Fluid under pressure flows, e.g. from a pump system at the earth's surface, through the concave, through the anchor body, to and through the mandrel, exiting the mandrel beneath the piston to move the piston upwardly, thereby moving the slip out from the housing. Initially a shear pin or shear screw holds the slip in place. The present invention also discloses a retrieval tool for retrieving the whipstock system from a wellbore. The retrieval tool, in one aspect, has a member that is inserted into and held within a corresponding recess in the top of a concave while an opposed portion of the tool abuts a side of the concave opposite the recess to securely grip the concave and the apparatus suspended therefrom for retrieval.
