The addition of an amine functional poly(vinyl alcohol) in a process for making recycled paper products results in improvements in both the wet and dry strength of the resultant products. The amine functional poly(vinyl alcohol) used in the process is formed by the hydrolysis of vinyl acetate/vinyl amide copolymers or vinyl acetate/allyl amine copolymers, or optionally may be formed by the reaction of poly(vinyl alcohol ) with an amino-aldehyde dialkyl acetal.

Polyvinylaminals, optionally as the formed copolymer with polyvinyl hemiaminals, and polyvinyl acetals are added to a papermaking pulp slurry to improve the retention of fines in the final paper product. This polymer is provided by reacting a poly(vinylamine) which can be a homopolymer or a copolymer containing vinyl alcohol and vinyl amine units with a monoaldehyde. The aldehyde, such as butyraldehyde, modifies the structure of the polymer and increases its hydrophobicity. The use of these polymers in papermaking involving the recycle of waste papers provides notable advantages in fines retention because of the high level of fines which normally accompany such recycle paper waste.

Fines retention in papermaking with amine functional polymers

Ultra-fine polymeric fibers are produced from various polymeric materials by mixing with thermoplastic poly(vinyl alcohol) and extruding the mixture through a die followed by further orientation. The poly(vinyl alcohol) is extracted to yield liberated ultra-fine polymeric fibers. The polymer utilized can include post-consumer polymer waste.

Process for the production of ultra-fine polymeric fibers

Zinc carboxylate catalysts for the copolymerization of carbon dioxide and epoxides are prepared by the reaction of zinc oxide with glutaric or adipic acid in an aprotic reaction solvent. Azeotropic distillation may be used to separate the water-solvent phase from the reaction mixture, or the catalyst may be separated from the reaction mixture by filtration and drying, generally without the need for repeated washings to remove active hydrogen atom sources. Examples of aprotic reaction solvents are toluene, dibutyl ether, anisole and ethyl benzoate.

This invention provides a means for aiding in the processing of polyimide or polyamide-imide resins containing olefinic unsaturated end groups by use of unsaturated imide or their corresponding amide acid compounds which act as a flux for the resin. These fluxing compounds enhance the flow of these resins during processing and also facilitates the removal of volatiles thereby permitting the preparation of dense, low void content objects of high mechanical strength.

Processing aids for high temperature polymers

A process for preparing water-dilutable, heat-curing coating compositions comprises (a) reacting an aromatic polyglycidyl ether with a compound containing an active hydrogen followed by the addition of ethylene oxide to form an adduct containing hydroxyl groups, (b) adding an aminoplast curing agent, and (c) diluting with water to give a stable aqueous composition. The process gives compositions which are useful in preparing coatings for a wide variety of substrates obviating the need for organic solvents with their inherent costs and environmental hazards.
