An assembly of a compressor for pressurizing a fluid includes a main housing having a portion being substantially planar. The housing defines at least two parallel intersecting bores. At least two rotors are journaled for rotation within the bores. A plurality of vent channels in the main housing extend outwardly from at least one bore through the portion being substantially planar. The vent channels are configured for the fluid to flow through the vent channels. A slide valve assembly is operably connected to the housing proximate the plurality of vent channels. The slide valve assembly has a valve plate wherein the valve plate has a substantially planar side that is sealingly engaged with the planar portion of the main housing. The valve plate is positioned into one of a plurality positions relative to the vent channels.

A twin screw compressor has a working chamber bypass that is used at start-up of the compressor. This system provides pressure relief by allowing oil or other fluid to pass through it. The bypass includes a fluid passage that extends from the working chamber to the discharge port with a one way valve disposed inside the passage.

This invention is directed to a locomotive air compressor that includes a detachable bearing housing that houses an outboard crankshaft bearing. The bearing housing includes a flange, a tapered housing and a bearing retainer. The housing also includes a central bore to allow for the passage of a crankshaft and an annular recess which supports the outboard crankshaft bearing. The addition of an outboard crankshaft support bearing allows the placement of the bearing closer to the electric motor, eliminating deflections that are inherent with extended, unsupported crankshafts. The elimination of crankshaft deflections allows the use of more efficient electric motors that have a smaller air gap between the rotor and the stator. The bearing housing is detachable to allow access to the bearings in the crankcase for easy servicing.
