Sensitive data such as patient records are securely transferred between a programmer and a data encryption. A database residing on the programmer contains patient information obtained by at least one implantable medical device. A key source provides the programmer with a first key and the remote expert data center with a second key to be used in the encryption/decryption process. An encryption engine residing within the programmer encrypts the sensitive patient information contained within the database, using the first key. The programmer transmits the encrypted patient information to the remote expert data center via a data communications system such as a public network. A decryption engine residing within the remote expert data center decrypts the encrypted sensitive patient information using the second key.

Method and apparatus to secure data transfer from medical device systems

A user authentication system utilizes biometric traits such as fingerprints, vein print, voice print, facial images, iris/retina and similar distinguishing characteristics to allow access to programmers, ETPs, PSAs and similar instruments associated with implantable medical devices (IMDs). The authentication system provides a hierarchical scheme that allows access based on expertise and need basis.

User authentication in medical device systems

A system and method for providing an automated software update to a programmer or equivalent device used in implantable medical device system is disclosed. The programmer comprises a remote instrument configuration database containing current instrument configuration information. The programmer user interface initiates an interface to a centralized globally accessible remote expert data center located at a distal location relative to the programmer. The remote expert data center includes an instrument configuration database containing configuration data for the programmer. The remote expert data center also includes a released software database containing software applications compatible with the programmer. Further, the remote expert data center contains a rule set database which identifies an approved software application for the programmer. A management component of the remote expert data center enables the transmission of the approved software application to the programmer.

Apparatus and method to automatic remote software updates of medical device systems

An apparatus and method for normalizing waveform information displayed on a medical device. This waveform normalization allows the user to quickly adjust individual waveforms if they exceed the normal viewing range on the display. An electrogram signal is received from an implantable medical device. The electrogram signal is continuously transformed into a plurality of voltage data samples. A waveform is created from the plurality of voltage data samples, and the waveform is displayed on a medical display device. A user selectable waveform normalization control is located adjacent each displayed waveform on the medical display device. Upon activation of the waveform normalization control, the adjacent waveform is normalized to a pre-determined nominal height on the display.
