A communication device configured to operate in accordance with a first communication protocol and to align itself with one or more communications transmitted in accordance with that protocol by identifying a communication transmitted in accordance with a second communication protocol that is not intended for the communication device, deriving alignment information from the identified communication and configuring itself to receive a communication transmitted in accordance with the first communication protocol in dependence on the alignment information.

Device and method for deriving alignment information

A variable inductor structure for varying an inductance responsive to a digital tuning signal, comprising: a first inductor; a second, adjustable, inductor; and a digital control mechanism configured to receive the digital tuning signal and to adjust the effective inductance of the second inductor in response to the digital tuning signal; wherein the second inductor is positioned sufficiently close to the first inductor so as to be capable of altering by mutual inductance the effective inductance of the first inductor in dependence on the digital tuning signal.

Tuning circuit

A communication device for communicating via a wireless network that is permitted to operate only in communication channels that are not designated for use by another network, the communication device being configured to determine that it is permitted to use a communication channel and use only a part of the bandwidth of that communication channel in dependence on an activity associated with a device operating outside of the wireless network.

Channel bandwidth

A transceiver includes a first circuit having a connector for connection to an antenna and receiving circuitry, and a second circuit having transmitting circuitry. The first and second circuits are coupled using a balun, where the balun is arranged so that its unbalanced side is in the first circuit and its balanced side is in the second circuit.

Transmit/receive switch

An inductor structure comprising: a first loop and a second loop; a first feed line connected to a first end of the first loop and a second feed line connected to a first end of the second loop, each of the first and second feed lines extending through an area circumscribed by one of the first and second loops; and a crossover section adjacent to the first end of the first loop and the first end of the second loop, the crossover section coupling the first loop to the second loop so as to cause current flowing from the first feed line to the second feed line to circulate around the first loop in a first rotational direction and around the second loop in a second rotational direction opposite to the first rotational direction.

Inductor structure

A communication device arranged to operate in accordance with a communication protocol in which a transmitting device is scheduled to commence a transmission at a time known in advance to the receiving device, includes at least two antennas and is arranged to select one of those antennas to receive a transmission from a transmitting device by, immediately before the transmitting device is scheduled to commence its transmission: assessing a quality of a signal received by means of a first one of the antennas; assessing a quality of a signal received by means of a second one of the antennas; and determining, based on the assessed quality of the signals received by means of the first and second antennas, the antenna to be used for receiving the transmission from the transmitting device.

Antenna selection

A phase-locked loop comprising; an oscillator configured to output an oscillating signal in dependence on the control signal at an input of the oscillator; a phase detector and loop filter configured to output a low frequency compensation signal in dependence on the output of the oscillator and a reference signal; a correlator configured to frequency correlate an interferer signal and the low frequency compensation signal, and in dependence on that correlation generate a correlation signal; and an adaptive filter configured to adapt the interferer signal in dependence on the correlation signal to output a high frequency compensation signal; and a summation unit configured to combine the low frequency compensation signal and the high frequency compensation signal to form a control signal to drive the input of the oscillator.

Phase-locked loop

A local oscillator circuit for a signal transmitter or receiver, the circuit comprising: an input for receiving a master oscillating signal from a master oscillator; and signal processing circuitry configured to be clocked by the master oscillating signal to generate a local oscillator signal, the signal processing circuitry being such that the local oscillator signal has substantially no harmonic content at any integer multiple of the frequency of the master oscillator signal, which oscillates at (2n+1)/2 times the frequency of the generated local oscillator signal, with n being a positive integer.

Mixing waveforms

A method for estimating the distance between a transmitter and a receiver, the transmitter being arranged to transmit a signal as a series of bursts, and the carrier frequency of each burst being set according to a predetermined sequence, the method comprising: forming a first series comprising the measured differences between the phases of successive bursts as received at the receiver; forming a second series comprising estimated differences between the phases of successive bursts as received at a supposed time difference between the transmitter and the receiver; and determining the quality of fit between the first series and the second series.

Distance estimation

A transmitter for transmitting signals, comprising: a modulator for modulating a data signal, the modulator being capable of modulating the data signal according to any of two or more modulation schemes to form a modulated signal; an amplification arrangement for amplifying the modulated signal with any of two or more levels of gain; and a control system configured to interdependently select one of the modulation schemes and one of the levels of gain, and to control the modulator to adopt the selected modulation scheme and to control the amplifier to adopt the selected level of gain.
