An apparatus is disclosed, along with methods and constituent devices, for generating omnidirectional planar projections for an exemplary laser application to provide visual references for the construction field. The preferred embodiment utilizes a convex cone lens, the lateral surface of which provides for total internal reflection, to disperse the incident beam. The curvatures of the interior and exterior surfaces of a toroidal ring lens normalize and athermalize the dispersed beam such that the resulting projection is orthogonal to the incident beam throughout an operable temperature range. Alternate optical embodiments are also disclosed which utilize various means of dispersal and normalization such as a conical reflector, concave cone lens, double-prism ring and well-adapted spherical lenses. The preferred embodiment is adapted as a portable construction tool by additionally disclosed components including a path-compression prism assembly, an adjustable tripod support adapted to a structural base assembly, and various embodiments of a lens-shield concept.

Method, apparatus, and devices for projecting laser planes

A reference beam generator has first, second, and third projection turrets for projecting first, second, and third fan beams of laser light, respectively. The first, second, and third fan beams of laser light are oriented normal to each other. The turrets may be rotated such that each of said fan beams can each be rotated about an axis that is normal to the plane in which the fan beam is projected. The generator may be used to project a number of reference points and lines on multiple surfaces.

Reference beam generator and method

This invention greatly improves the quality of images obtained using optical systems illuminated by coherent light. It does so by removing the undesirable psuedo-random variations in the final image due to interference speckle and inhomogeneities in the spatial intensity distribution of the light source. A bundle of light-guiding fibers is interposed between the illumination source and the imaging system. Non-uniform propagation within the fiber bundle creates a psuedo-random phase variation across the illumination beam, which gives rise to a dynamic interference speckle pattern superimposed upon the desired image acquired by the optical system. Rotating the fiber bundle around the axis of propagation, whilst simultaneously integrating the output of the photosensitive detector over a period of time, substantially removes variations due to source inhomogeneities and coherent interference.

Apparatus for beam homogenization and speckle reduction

A laser beam projecting instrument primarily for construction purposes, and preferably self-leveling, produces four or five orthogonal output beams. The high-intensity central portion of a collimated elliptical beam from a laser diode is partially diverted by a beam splitter periscope device to produce one output beam, and the remainder of that central beam region is transmitted to produce another output beam in the straight-a-head direction. Two additional beams are produced from outer portions the beam's long dimension. In another embodiment, a five-beam instrument utilized two such periscopes in succession, thus producing three beams from the high intensity central region of the collimated beam.

A system which is preferably employed in a laser alignment instrument produces up to five orthogonal beams from a single laser diode beam. In one embodiment the optics take advantage of the elliptical shape of the beam from a laser diode which when collimated produces a plurality of orthogonal beams by reflection off a plurality of 45&deg;-angled reflective surfaces intercepting outer portions of the beam. In one preferred embodiment a solid reflective element was four 45&deg;-angled facets to produce four beams from outer portions of a preferably non-elliptical beam, and a fifth orthogonal beam is produced by transmission of a central portion of the beam through the element. The element can be solid glass, or it can be glass or other material with a central hole.

A system for aiming a remote IR temperature sensing device includes a beam splitter assembly and mirror assembly mounted on opposite sides of the body of the device. Both assemblies provide for adjusting the vertical and azimuthal positions of alignment beams to facilitate the use of inexpensive, low-tolerance parts while providing high accuracy to improve sensitivity, accuracy, and resolution. A dual action trigger initiates temperature measurement and logs currently measured temperature information.
