A control system for an engine includes a target air per cylinder (APC) module, a target area module, and a phaser scheduling module. The target APC module determines a target APC based on a target spark timing, a target intake cam phaser angle, and a target exhaust cam phaser angle. The target area module determines a target opening of a throttle valve of the engine based on the target spark timing, the target intake cam phaser angle, and the target exhaust cam phaser angle. The target area module controls the throttle valve based on the target opening. The phaser scheduling module determines the target intake and exhaust cam phaser angles based on the target APC. The phaser scheduling module controls intake and exhaust cam phasers of the engine based on the target intake and exhaust cam phaser angles, respectively.

Coordinated engine torque control

An engine control system includes a torque request control module to determine a first engine torque request. An artificial neural network (ANN) torque request module determines a second engine torque request using an ANN model. A torque security check module that selectively generates a malfunction signal based on the difference between the first engine torque request and the second engine torque request.

Redundant Torque Security Path

A control system includes a shift detection module, a request generation module, and a request setting module. The shift detection module detects when a transmission is executing a shift. The request generation module generates a transmission torque request to cause an engine to increase a transmission input shaft speed to a desired speed at a desired gear ratio when the transmission is executing the shift. The request setting module selectively sets the transmission torque request equal to a default torque request when the transmission torque request is greater than a first torque and the engine is coupled to a drive wheel.

Torque control system and method for shift assist

An engine control system of a vehicle comprises a reserves module and a fault diagnostic module. The reserves module controls airflow into an engine based on a driver torque request, increases the airflow into the engine when a reserve torque request is received, and outputs a torque output command for the engine based on the driver torque request. The fault diagnostic module selectively diagnoses a fault in the reserves module when the torque output command is greater than a sum of the driver torque request, a predetermined torque, and a load applied to the engine.

Engine torque reserve system diagnostic systems and methods

An engine system includes a throttle actuator module and a torque control module. The throttle actuator module controls a throttle actuator based on a desired throttle area. The torque control module determines an actuator torque. The torque control module determines a rate limited torque, a maximum torque, and a minimum torque based on the actuator torque and a predetermined rate of change. The torque control module determines the desired throttle area based on the actuator torque when the rate limited torque is greater than the maximum torque. The torque control module determines the desired throttle area based on the actuator torque when the rate limited torque is less than the minimum torque.

Securing throttle area in a coordinated torque control system

An engine control system comprises a torque determination module, a limit determination module, a torque limit module, and a torque control module. The torque determination module determines a desired torque based on a desired engine speed. The limit determination module determines a torque limit based on one of an engine oil temperature and a transmission fluid temperature. The torque limit module determines a final torque based on the desired torque and the torque limit. The torque control module selectively determines a throttle area based on the final torque. A throttle valve is actuated based on the throttle area.

Airflow based idle speed control power security

An air-per-cylinder (APC) security system for a vehicle comprises an APC determination module, an APC threshold determination module, and an APC diagnostic module. The APC determination module determines first and second APC values for first and second cylinders of an engine, respectively, based on mass airflow (MAF) into the engine. The APC threshold determination module determines an APC threshold based on the first APC value and a spark timing for the first cylinder. The APC diagnostic module selectively diagnoses a fault in the APC determination module when the second APC value is greater than a sum of the first APC value and the APC threshold.

Security for engine torque input air-per-cylinder calculations

A transmission control system for a vehicle includes a first module that generates a first modified signal based on a first position of a driver input device and a second module that receives the first modified signal from the first module. The second module generates a second modified signal based on a second position of the driver input device and regulates operation of a transmission of the vehicle based on the first and second modified signals.

System architecture optimization for electronic transmission range selection

A method of verifying the integrity of an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) of a control module includes inputting a first test value into one of a plurality of registers of the ALU and inputting a second test value into remaining registers of the plurality of registers. A first set of operations is performed between the one of the plurality of registers and each of the remaining registers to produce a first set of results. A fault is indicated when one of the first set of results varies from a first predetermined result.

Method of verifying integrity of control module arithmetic logic unit (ALU)

A control system for a vehicle includes a first counter that indicates a first count of a number of cylinders of an engine of the vehicle that are fueled. A second counter indicates a second count of the number of cylinders that are fueled. A control module determines a secure count based on the first count and the second count. The control module adjusts torque output of the engine based on the secure count.

Secured count of cylinders fueled in a coordinated torque control system

A vehicle having a system for validating a variable signal for input to a processor-performed function. An input module receives the signal. A processor tests first and second storage locations of a memory. After testing, the processor stores the signal in the first and second storage locations to obtain first and second stored values. The processor compares the first and second stored values and tests the first stored value for any corruption associated with receipt of the signal by said input module. The processor inputs the first and second stored values to first and second paths for performing the function to obtain two function results, and compares the results.

Validating control system software variables

An engine management system for a vehicle includes engine and transmission control modules that are connected to a serial vehicle data bus. A dedicated serial data bus is connected to the transmission control module and the engine control module. The engine and the transmission control modules perform processor validity and integrity checks over the dedicated data bus. In an alternate powertrain management system, engine and transmission control modules are connected to a serial vehicle data bus.

Cross-checking processors for powertrain control systems using a dedicated serial data link

A method of preventing undesirable vehicle behavior in a vehicle torque control system that includes determining an expected axle torque based on a vehicle speed, a powerplant profile, an accelerator pedal position and/or a cruise control signal. The method also includes estimating an actual axle torque of a powerplant based on a powerplant maximum torque, a throttle position and powertrain inefficiencies and converting the expected axle torque to an expected acceleration and the actual axle torque to an actual acceleration based on a wheel radius and a road load. The method further includes regulating a torque output of a powerplant when a rate-of-change in a difference between the expected acceleration and the estimated actual acceleration is greater than a first threshold.

Coordinated torque control security method and apparatus

Methods and apparatus are provided which generate an error signal if a sensor is either anticipated to fail or fails. At least two sensors provide input signals having magnitudes that approximately correspond to a sensed event. A processor calculates an actual correlation error for the two signals. A processor then further calculates an estimated new correlation value based on the difference of a stored initial correlation value and the actual correlation error. After a predetermined number of estimated correlation values are calculated, the error signal is generated if the difference between an estimated correlation value and the actual correlation error exceeds a predetermined threshold.

Methods and apparatus for determining the condition of a sensor and identifying the failure thereof

Apparatus are provided for an electronic throttle control (ETC) system having a throttle body assembly. The apparatus includes a throttle actuator, an input circuit receiving sensor signals and having first, second, and third reference voltages, a first throttle position sensor (TPS) connected to the second reference voltage, a second TPS connected to the second reference voltage, a manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor connected to the first reference voltage, a manifold airflow (MAF) sensor connected to the third reference voltage, and a processor connected to the input circuit and transmitting a control signal to the throttle actuator based on the sensors, reference voltages, and returns. The ETC system has improved remedial actions responsive to failures of the various sensors, reference voltages, and returns.
