A gaming machine for playing a wagering game includes a housing having a display region. A first image display device for simulating mechanical reels of a slot machine in the display region includes a curved surface that approximates the radius of curvature of a mechanical reel. The curved surface displays first video images that include a plurality of symbols indicating a randomly selected outcome of the wagering game. A second image display device displays second video images spatially separated from and overlaying the first video images within the display region. The second video images include indicia related to the wagering game.

A portable game machine is associated with a stationary wagering game machine. A method and system of operating a wagering game having simulated mechanical reels includes receiving a wager to play the wagering game. A first set of video images are displayed on a curved surface approximately a radius of curvature of a mechanical reel. The first set of video images simulates movement of a first set of reel symbols. In response to a triggering event, a second set of video images are displayed on the curved surface. The second set of video images simulate a transitioning from the first set of reel symbols to a second set of reel symbols.

Embodiments of a portable wagering game machine and a stationary wagering game machine are described herein. In one embodiment, a plurality of portable wagering game machines are associated with a stationary wagering game machine. Group wagering game data is displayed on the stationary wagering game machine. The group wagering game data includes wagering content for viewing by multiple players. The video display is located behind the transparent layer for projecting moving images onto the transparent layer. Environmental mapping may be used to sense the location of the player and/or the ambient lighting surrounding the gaming machine and alter the images based on the sensing. The gaming machine provides video images that more closely simulate the look of traditional mechanical reels.

Dynamic generation of a profile for spinning reel gaming machines

A method of implementing desired odds for a reel-type slot machine is disclosed. All of the possible reel stop combinations are assigned to unique terminal nodes in one or more fractional branching trees stored in a ROM. The tree(s) comprises a main tier, a plurality of lower tiers and a plurality of terminal nodes. Each of the tiers has a number of entries which lead either to a lower tier or to a terminal node. A random number generator is used to select entries on each tier until a terminal node is selected. The reel stop combination or a particular symbol assigned to the terminal node is then displayed on the pay line and an award is paid based on a pay table.
