A storage medium includes a base substrate, a first metallic layer, a first border region, and a first cover substrate. The base substrate includes a first side and a second side. The first side and the second side oppose one another. The first metallic layer defines a first pattern. The first metallic layer directly abuts the first side of the base substrate. The first border region extends about the first pattern. The first cover substrate is positioned against an exposed surface of the first metallic layer such that the first metallic layer is positioned between the first side of the base substrate and the first cover substrate. The first cover substrate is coupled to the first border region.

Storage mediums and methods of making the same

A backlight includes a substrate, a plurality of light sources proximate the substrate, a first reflective layer on the substrate, and a plurality of patterned reflectors over the plurality of light sources. Each light source includes a size measured in a plane parallel to the substrate. Each patterned reflector is aligned with a corresponding light source and includes a thickness profile. The thickness profile includes a substantially flat section and a curved section extending from and surrounding the substantially flat section. The substantially flat section varies in thickness by no more than plus or minus 20 percent of an average thickness of the substantially flat section. The substantially flat section includes a size in a plane parallel to the substrate equal to or greater than the size of each light source.

A flexible-substrate circuit for a liquid lens, a liquid lens system, and a method of making a liquid lens system are provided. The system can include a plate having an array of wells and a flexible-substrate circuit. The flexible-substrate circuit can have a longitudinal portion disposed on ridges of the plate, between wells of the plate, and a wing portions transverse to the longitudinal portion that extend into the wells, bonded to walls of the corresponding wells. The wing portion have a first electrode and a second electrode electrically connected to a controller via the longitudinal portion.

A projection screen for displaying an image is disclosed. The projection screen may comprise an electrode, a plurality of cavities, an upper and lower substrate, and a hydrophobic liquid. The electrode may be disposed on a lower substrate. The hydrophobic liquid may be disposed between the upper substrate and lower substrate. The plurality of cavities may be disposed between the upper and the lower substrates. The projection screen may be associated with the electrode. The projection screen may be configured such that an application of an appropriate voltage to the electrode changes optical properties of the projection screen. Optical properties of the projection screen may comprise transparent and opaque states. Modulation between transparent and opaque states may be in such speed that a viewer sees the projection of a projector on the projection screen in the opaque state as well as sees through the projection screen in the transparent state with no perceived interruptions.

A vacuum insulated glass unit includes a first and a second glass pane and a pane bonding layer. The first and second glass panes each include a vacuum chamber side opposite an outer side. The vacuum chamber side of the first glass pane includes an etched interior surface, a glass pane periphery having a periphery surface, and a plurality of glass spacers each having an end surface. The pane bonding layer is positioned between and engaged with the periphery surface of the glass pane periphery of the first glass pane and the second glass pane and couples the first glass pane to the second glass pane. Each end surface of the plurality of glass spacers and the periphery surface of the glass pane periphery are offset from the etched interior surface such that a vacuum chamber is disposed between the first and the second glass panes.

Vacuum insulated glass units and methodology for manufacturing the same

Packaged chip-on-board (COB) LED arrays are provided where a color conversion medium is distributed within a glass containment plate, rather than silicone, to reduce the operating temperature of the color conversion medium and avoid damage while increasing light output. A lighting device is provided comprising a chip-on-board (COB) light emitting diode (LED) light source, a light source encapsulant, a distributed color conversion medium, and a glass containment plate. The COB LED light source comprises a thermal heat sink framework and at least one LED and defines a light source encapsulant cavity in which the light source encapsulant is distributed over the LED. The glass containment plate is positioned over the light source encapsulant cavity and contains the distributed color conversion medium. The light source encapsulant is distributed over the LED at a thickness that is sufficient to encapsulate the LED and define encapsulant thermal conduction paths.

LED lighting devices

Methods of forming polarized panes for variable transmission windows are disclosed. The polarized panes are formed from transparent substrates that are brushed with a brushing pattern that varies continuously in a select direction over each of one or more periods. A layer of polarizable material such as POLARCOAT material can be deposited on and responds to the brushed surface by forming a polarization pattern that substantially matches the brushing pattern and thus also includes one or more periods.

Methods of forming polarized panes for variable transmission windows

Solar-redshift systems comprise an integral array of redshift modules, each having at least a focusing device, a target, and a quantum-dot vessel. The quantum-dot vessel contains quantum dots that emit light having an emission wavelength. The focusing device directs incident solar radiation through a focusing gap and toward the quantum-dot vessel, or into a slab waveguide and then toward the quantum-dot vessel, causing the quantum dots to emit redshifted light having the emission wavelength. The redshifted light is directed to the target, examples of which include a photovoltaic material or a living photosynthetic organism. The target has increased sensitivity or response to photons having the wavelength of the redshifted light. A trapping reflector component of the quantum-dot vessel prevents loss of redshifted light to the environment outside the solar-redshift system and allows undesirable infrared light to be removed from the system.

An optical subassembly includes an optical device assembly including an active device and an optical fiber cable operably connected to the active device that sends optical signals to the active device and receives optical signals from the active device. A carrier module has a cable receiving space that receives the optical fiber cable therein. The carrier module includes a device support structure that supports the active device for placement on a mating surface during controlled manufacturing.

An optical touch screen that utilizes a planar transparent sheet and that is configured to determine the position of a touch event on the transparent sheet is disclosed. Light-source elements and light-sensing elements are operably disposed at a perimeter of the transparent sheet. Light is detected over lines-of-sight between the light-source elements and the light-sensing elements. Attenuated lines-of-sight due to the touch event are determined. Central lines are established based on the attenuated lines-of-sight. The locations of central-line intersections are then established. The average of the locations of the central-line intersections is then used to establish the location of the touch event.

Optical touch-screen systems and methods using a planar transparent sheet

A lighting device is provided comprising a chip-on-board (COB) light emitting diode (LED) light source, a light source encapsulant, a quantum dot distributed color conversion medium, and a quantum dot glass containment plate. The COB LED light source comprises at least one LED and defines a light source encapsulant cavity in which the light source encapsulant is distributed over the LED. The quantum dot glass containment plate is positioned over the light source encapsulant cavity and contains a quantum dot distributed color conversion medium. The distributed color conversion medium comprises a quantum dot structure and is distributed in two dimensions over an emission field of the lighting device within the quantum dot glass containment plate.

In an input apparatus, an input system includes a displaceable member movable in an operational zone and a tracking surface that moves in correlation with movement of the displaceable member. An optical sensor has a field of view of at least a portion of the tracking surface during movement of the displaceable member in the operational zone and generates optical data in response to light received from the tracking surface. A processing system produces motion measures indicative of movement of the tracking surface from the optical data. In an input method, optical data is generated in response to light received from a field of view of at least a portion of a tracking surface that moves in correlation with movement of a displaceable member during movement of the displaceable member in an operational zone. Motion measures indicative of movement of the tracking surface are produced from the optical data.
