An engine oil supply system for a motor vehicle and a method of controlling an engine oil supply system of a motor vehicle is disclosed in which, particularly during an engine overrun period or an engine shut-down, kinetic energy from the slowing engine is used to drive an oil pump so as to store oil in an oil accumulator for later use by one or more engine components without the engine using fuel. The stored oil allows a downsized oil pump to be used thereby saving fuel by providing a supply of oil in addition to or as an alternative to the oil supplied from the oil pump.

Engine oil supply system and a method of controlling an engine oil supply system

A method is disclosed for heating a liquid supplied to an engine of a motor vehicle by a pump when the temperature of the liquid is low, thereby reducing the operating efficiency of the engine. The method comprises inefficient operation of the pump by constricting flow to create heat that is transferable to the liquid. Inefficient operation of the pump is enacted when service brakes are applied and the vehicle is decelerating to minimize negative impact on fuel economy and overall engine efficiency.

In an energy storage and recovery system for a hybrid vehicle, the operating ratio range of a continuously variable transmission (CVT)which transfers drive between the vehicle's drivelineand a flywheelis effectively extended by the use of an integrated starter-generator (ISG)connected to the flywheel shaft. When there is a high mismatch of rotational speed between the propshaftand the flywheel shaft, prior to connecting the two shafts by a clutch, the ISGeither spins up or decelerates the flywheeluntil its speed is brought within the optimum operating range of the CVT. Apparatus and method for controlling a hybrid vehicle

In a two-stroke engine having a pressurized air rail for producing an atomized fuel spray for injection into the individual combustion chambers, oil for lubrication is atomized by metering it into a stream of compressed air taken from the rail or a reservoir connected thereto and the resulting oil/air mist is injected into the crankcase and/or the lower part of the cylinder selectively and directly on to points requiring lubrication.

Lubrication of two-stroke internal combustion engines

A modular hydraulic valve actuating assembly for use in association with a single combustion chamber in a multicylinder internal combustion engine cylinder head. The assembly includes a housing having a mounted surface to attach to the cylinder head immediately above a poppet valve. The housing includes a first cavity spaced from and oriented non-parallel to the poppet valve, a second cavity coaxially aligned with the poppet valve, and a fluid passageway extending between and hydraulically coupled to the first and second cavities. A master piston within the housing co-operates with a camshaft to define a first enclosed fluid chamber which varies in displacement as the master piston is reciprocally oscillated by the camshaft. A slave piston within the housing co-operates with the poppet valve to define a second enclosed fluid chamber hydraulically connected to the first and varying in displacement as the slave piston oscillates. A valve means within the housing regulates the flow of fluid from the pressurized master cylinder through an accumulator fluid port thereby automatically varying any one or more of valve lift, valve timing or duration of valve opening in response to an input signal at any point during engine operation.

Hydraulic valve control system for internal combustion engines

A manifold for a bank of four cylinders of an engine comprises four primary tracts each leading to a respective cylinder, and two secondary tracts each connected at a respective one of two branching points to a respective pair of primary tracts which lead to cylinders of which the combustion cycles are in antiphase. The two branching points are arranged contiguous to one another to form a decoupling chamber between which there is disposed a valve connecting the two branching points. The resonant frequency of the manifold can be changed by opening and closing the valve.

An internal combustion engine has intake and exhaust ducts, including an exhaust duct portion formed as an integral part of the engine along with the engine coolant jacket and passages, the exhaust duct portion being located in good thermal contact with the engine coolant flow passages, and flow diverting valves in the exhaust duct portion to direct exhaust gases to flow through the exhaust duct portion when the engine is cold in order to accelerate warm-up, the valves causing the duct to be bypassed under normal operating conditions.
