Certain embodiments of the invention provide plates for treating periarticular fractures or other non-full body weight bearing applications that combine polyaxial fixation with a low profile and enhanced contouring that more closely conforms to bone. Such plates can be designed to achieve buttressing effect and/or to be used in a reinforcement mode. Other features can be combined with these. Such plates can be created for use on bone sites such as on a tibia, fibula, metatarsal, calcaneous, other foot bone, humerus, radius, ulna, spinal, maxillofacial, as well as sites on other bones.

Systems and methods for using polyaxial plates

Variable angle holes in bone plates structured to facilitate the formation of axial compression or tension of a bone, or which can assist in bone distraction. The variable angle hole can extend about a central axis and includes an inwardly extending wedge wall. The variable angle hole can be sized to receive insertion of a fixation element at a location at which a central longitudinal axis of the fixation element is axially offset from the central axis of the variable angle hole by an offset distance at least when the fixation element is initially driven into bone at least in a transverse direction. The wedge wall can be configured to be engaged by a portion of the fixation element in a manner that axially displaces at least one of the bone plate, the fixation element, and/or bone(s) in a direction that can generally reduce or increase the offset distance.

Disclosed herein is a patella clamp configured to grip a patient's patella. The patella clamp includes a clamping assembly, a ratchet arm assembly, and a handle assembly. The clamping assembly includes first and second patella grip portions mounted in opposing relationship. In use, actuation of the handle assembly moves the second patella grip portion towards the first patella grip portion to clamp the patient's patella. The handle assembly is configured to be moveably adjustable (e.g., rotatable) relative to the clamping assembly. For example, each of the first and second patella grip portions are coupled to mating features mounted on the ratchet arm assembly. Decoupling of the mating features allows the first and second patella grip portions to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the ratchet arm assembly. Thus arranged, the patella clamp is configured to enable the surgeon to reposition the handle assembly to provide increased visibility, etc.

Embodiments of the present invention provide a bone fixation assembly that can provide polyaxial fixation. The polyaxial fixation may be provided by fins that protrude from an opening in a bone plate or fins that protrude from a fastener head.

A method for targeting a landmark of an orthopaedic implant comprises implanting the orthopaedic implant in a body. The orthopaedic implant having at least one landmark defining two or more locations for targeting and a first magnetic sensor located at a known distance from at least one of the two or more locations. The method includes comprises identifying one of the locations using a landmark identifier, the landmark identifier having at least one of a second magnetic sensor and a magnetic field generator, installing a transfixion element in the at least one landmark, and identifying a second location using the landmark identifier.

Targeting landmarks of orthopaedic devices

A bone plate system for fixation of bone includes a bone plate and a first fastener. The bone plate includes a bone contacting surface, an upper surface, and a first opening extending between the bone contacting surface and the upper surface. The first opening includes a lower portion, a non-threaded upper portion, and a threaded portion. The threaded portion includes threads and converges towards the lower portion. The lower portion includes a smallest diameter of the first opening. The first fastener includes a head at least partially comprising a spherical portion and a first material. When the first fastener is inserted into the first opening, the threads of the first opening form threads in the first material on the head of the first fastener to secure the first fastener in place at one of a plurality of possible angles within the first opening.
