Printing devices include a printer power supply, a printer processor connected to the printer power supply, printing components connected to the printer power supply and the printer processor, and a tablet interface device connected to the printer processor and the printer power supply. The tablet interface device includes a tablet processor, a USB connection electrically connected to the tablet processor and the printer power supply, and a touchscreen surface electrically connected to the tablet processor. The tablet processor is adapted to operate independently of the printer processor.

A job includes pages that have multiple items positioned according to coordinates. A sheet coordinate location identifier for each of the items (that corresponds to the coordinates for the items) is added to the job. The job is printed to produce printed sheets of items (printed items) printed according to the coordinates. A cutting device cuts the printed sheets, according to the coordinates, into individually cut items. Each of the cut items includes the sheet coordinate location identifier printed thereon, and this identifies the pre-cutting locations of the cut items within the uncut sheets of print media. The cut items are inspected for cutting defects to identify defective items. Pre-cutting locations of the defective items are identified using only the sheet coordinate location identifier printed on the defective items. A repair recommendation for the cutting device is based on the most common pre-cutting location of the defective items.

A system that eliminates return and reset of a pusher in a media collation system includes the use of bidirectional bins that allow accumulated sets of media in the bins to be collated in first or second directions and pushed to either of two banders rather than being restricted to one bander.

A method and system for on-demand book production is provided in which covers and book content are synchronized at book binding equipment. In one exemplary system and method, a single printer prints a book cover followed by its corresponding book block. The cover and book block are each sequentially staged and synchronized together for binding in the binding equipment. In another method and system for on-demand book production, covers are printed and encoded at a first printer and a book block printing instruction is initiated in response to decoding of the cover in the binding equipment. Printing of the book block is in a separate but integrated printer and the book block is fed to the binding equipment for binding with the book cover. In each instance, synchronized book covers and book blocks are bound in and output from the binding equipment.

This is a stacker cart useful to collect a paper stack in a paper-handling system. The stacker cart has movables so that it can be moved into and out of a housing in the system. At a top section of the stacker cart is a transfer plate that receives the paper stack after processing, finishing, or marking. This transfer plate and the stacker cart have on their lower surface movables that allow both easy moving of the slidable plate off the stacker cart and easy moving of the stacker cart from one location to another. The transfer plate has at least one hook that is connected to a rope or for moving the transfer plate to a second surface. The movables used in both the transfer plate and the stacker cart can be wheels, slides, or bearings.

An electronic printing system having an image input for receiving digitally represented images from a source of input information such as an image input scanner; a controller having the capability of rotating an image in at least 90.degree. increments and which can provide such rotation in accordance with a pre-programmed set of commands; a user interface, connected to the controller, and for directing information about the orientation of the input image, and information about output orientation and placement in accordance with one of a plurality of selectable output orientation; and an output, such as a binary printer, to which the controller may direct reoriented image data.

A process is provided for operating an electronic printing system at a job site for producing print jobs from image signals, the electronic printing system having programming means for inputting printing instructions for the print jobs and a plurality of supply trays for supplying print media, including the steps of: identifying stock characteristics currently available for loading in the print media supply trays when printing the print jobs; identifying stock characteristics potentially selectable but not available at the site for loading in the print media supply trays; mapping individual ones of the unavailable stock characteristics with at least one of the available stock characteristics; on input of a print job, comparing a requested stock characteristic of the print job with the stock characteristics available; and where the requested stock characteristic is unavailable, using the mapping step to substitute a corresponding available stock characteristic for the unavailable, requested stock characteristic.

An electronic reprographic printing system for printing on output sheets of a print job, wherein a set of electronic page images is created, such as by scanning a set of original documents, storing the electronic page images in memory, and wherein certain images are variably shifted on the output sheets. The amount of image shift is dependent upon the size dimensions of the original documents and the size dimensions of the output sheets. This size dependent shifting allows for printing onto output sheets of varying sizes, or scanning from original documents of different sizes, such as from different scanning modes. The variable image shift is particularly useful for printing on tabs where the original documents are all of a standard size, and the images are specially shifted onto the tabs during printing.
