A needle-based medical device and method of manufacturing the same are disclosed. A needle device includes a hub having a longitudinal axis; a needle having a sharp distal tip; and a needle shield assembly associated with the needle and moveable from a non-shielding position to a shielding position. In the shielding position, the sharp distal tip is covered by at least part of the needle shield assembly. A bushing disposed about the needle, and a latch for engaging with the hub when the needle shield assembly is in the non-shielding position are further provided.

Needle shielding device

A passively activated needle shield assembly with a hub engagement member for a needle device is provided. The needle shield assembly includes a needle shield movable between a non-shielding position and a shielding position. The needle shield prevents emergence of a sharp distal end of a needle therefrom in the shielding position. An engagement member is slidingly disposed relative to the needle shield for engaging the hub to the needle shield in the non-shielding position. A retainer operatively couples to the engagement member and is positioned to prevent disengagement of the engagement member from the hub in the non-shielding position, and enables removal of the hub from the needle shield by disengaging the engagement member from the hub when the needle shield moves to the shielding position.

A needle-based medical device and method of manufacturing the same are disclosed. A needle device includes a hub having a longitudinal axis; a needle having a sharp distal tip; and a needle shield assembly associated with the needle and moveable from a non-shielding position to a shielding position. In the shielding position, the sharp distal tip is covered by at least part of the needle shield assembly. A latch is further provided for engaging with the hub when the needle shield assembly is in the non-shielding position; as well as a locking member operably connected to the needle shield assembly, and located at least partially within the hub when the needle shield assembly is in the non-shielding position. The latch and locking member lock the latch to the hub, such that when the needle shield assembly moves into the shielding position, the locking member moves generally proximally, unlocking the latch.

Release mechanism for use with needle shielding devices

A needle assembly with a needle shield is disclosed. The shield includes a lumen slidable on the needle, a holder and a needle blocking object which moves at least partially into the lumen in order to block distal movement of the needle. A spring biases the blocking object towards the needle axis. Proximal movement of the needle relative to the shield is limited by a restraint in the form of a discontinuity on the needle which abuts the shield, a tether or a tube abutting the needle hub. When the needle shield moves from a non-shielding position to a shielding position, the needle blocking object moves at least partially into the lumen. The needle blocking object is radially and axially constrained in the shielding position. The holder also prevents radial, longitudinal and circumferential movement of the blocking object. In one embodiment, the needle blocking object is a ball. A catheter adapter and tube may be threaded over the needle. The needle blocking object may also lock the catheter adapter to the needle shield, allowing it to be released only when the needle is shielded.

Methods of manufacturing a catheter introducer or needle assembly and needle shield are disclosed. A needle shield has a blocking object (preferably a ball) which moves from an non-shielding position to a shielding position. The catheter introducer is made by placing the blocking object into the shield and inserting the proximal end of the needle into the shield while the blocking object is in the shielding position. The catheter introducer is made using extruded polymeric tubes which may have coextruded reinforcing.

Method of making a needle shielding device

An injection device is provided. The device includes a housing having a first end defining a first opening. A plunger is received within the first opening of the housing to move between first and second positions. A cartridge is disposed in the housing and has an interior serving as a reservoir for a drug. A delivery needle is disposed within the housing and is in fluid communication with the reservoir via an interruptible fluid channel. A locking mechanism is disposed in the housing. In the first position of the plunger the delivery needle is enclosed by the plunger and in the second position of the plunger the delivery needle is placed in an injection position and the plunger activates the locking mechanism whereby when the plunger returns to the first position the locking mechanism prevents the needle from being placed in the injection position.

Disposable injection device

A needle-based medical device including a needle guide and a method for constructing the same are disclosed. The needle-based medical device includes a tube having a first lumen; a needle guide which is dimensioned to be inserted into the lumen of the tube, and a needle. The needle is inserted such that an end is positioned in the needle guide. A glue may also be provided to secure the needle guide to the tube. In one embodiment, the tube may be made of extruded plastic.

A winged needle set is disclosed. The winged needle set has a housing and opposed wings which can be grasped between the fingers for insertion of the needle into a body. The winged needle set has a finned member which is rotatable about the axis of the needle. Rotation of the finned member towards one of the wings actuates a needle shield, which moves along the needle in the distal direction. In one embodiment, the needle shield has includes a blocking object (such as a ball), a biasing spring and a holder for the blocking object.

A catheter-advancement actuated needle retraction system is disclosed herein. The invention includes a generally hollow barrel that houses a needle hub, which can include a flashback chamber. A needle is affixed to the distal end of the needle hub and is aligned to extend through an opening in the distal end of the barrel. The needle extends through a catheter hub and catheter affixed to the catheter hub. A spring is disposed in the barrel lumen to cooperate with the needle hub to urge the needle hub toward the proximal end of the barrel. A latch actuator is releasably engaged with the catheter hub.
