A golf club head with a sole having a low stiffness compliance zone, which allows the face to deflect downward upon impact with a golf ball, is disclosed herein. The compliance zone comprises a plurality of through openings that are filled with one or more filler pieces comprising a low modulus material, all of which are located within three inches of a face section measured along a front-to-back axis of the golf club head.

Methods of manufacturing a golf club head with one or more stiffening members proximate the face, and particularly solid rods or a plate with one or more cutouts, is disclosed herein. One method includes the steps of preparing a wax mold of a golf club head including a plate stiffening member with excess material, casting the golf club head, and machining away the excess material. Another method includes the steps of casting a golf club body, providing a plate stiffening member, providing a face component such as a face cup, tack welding the plate stiffening member and the face component to the golf club body, and welding these parts together.

A golf club head comprising a channel, a slidable weight that can be reversibly fixed at any point within the channel, and a pocket to store a portion of the slidable weight is disclosed herein. The slidable weight comprises first and second weight plates, each made of materials having different densities, a lightweight retainer, a screw, and a nut. The second weight plate has the same dimensions as, and is interchangeable with, the first weight plate and is disposed in a pocket in the sole proximate the face of the golf club head. The retainer and nut have snap-fit features that allow them to remain loosely attached to one another during adjustment of the assembly and when one weight plate is swapped with the other.

In particular, the present invention is directed to a fairway wood head comprising a body with a front wall, an upper opening, a return portion between the front wall and the upper opening, a hosel, an interface between the hosel and the heel side of the body, and a hosel support ring or support rod, and a composite crown affixed to the body to close the upper opening and define a hollow interior. The support structure reduces the stresses placed on, for example, the crown during hosel bending processes.
