A cyclic packaging process, such as VFFS or HFFS, packages a product with a viscosity of &#x2265;100,000 centipoise without leaving substantial air pockets in the package, by utilizing a means () for restricting upstream flow of viscous product in the strand of tubing (). The result is that packages of uniform weight of the viscous product can be made without substantial air pockets therein, and without having to use metal clips. An apparatus () for carrying out the process is disclosed.

An apparatus for positioning and attaching a plurality of fitments to a film includes a guiding device for guiding a plurality of fitments; an attaching device for attaching the fitments to the film; a means for advancing the attached fitments and film; and an indexing device for indexing the fitments, the indexing device including a spring housing, a spring, and a fastener, the indexing device being configured such that when a first fitment has been attached to the film and then advances past the indexing device, the spring controllably releases the first fitment, and a second fitment is advanced into attaching position. A process and vertical form/fill/seal apparatus are also disclosed.

Zigzag-shaped pouches are formed from flexible web material by positioning two portions of the web material in overlying relation and sealing them together along top, bottom, and opposite side edges of the pouch. The side edges of the pouch are made up of a plurality of linear segments connected end-to-end and alternately inclined in opposite directions to form a zigzag-shaped edge. Each linear segment of one edge is substantially parallel to a corresponding segment of the opposite edge, such that the two edges are substantially complementary in shape, whereby the pouch as a whole has a zigzag shape.

The present invention relates to sealed pouches, and apparatus and processes for producing the same. The pouch includes contoured first and second lateral edges, with each lateral edge having concave and convex surfaces. The concave surface of the first lateral edge is substantially opposite the convex surface of the second lateral edge and the convex surface of the first lateral edge is substantially opposite the concave surface of the second lateral edge. Accordingly, a distance between the first and second lateral edges is substantially the same for all elevations of the pouch.
