Embodiments are described for engaging a pumping cartridge with a pump drive. In certain embodiments, the cartridge, including a cylinder and a movable piston assembly, is initially assembled or subsequently positioned so that the distance between the attachment point on the piston assembly for coupling to a drive assembly, and a reference point on the cylinder, is greater than the maximal distance that will be encountered during normal oscillation of the piston during use. The cartridge, in certain embodiments, may be pressed into a drive assembly that immobilizes the cartridge and couples the piston assembly to the driveshaft. In certain embodiments, when the cartridge is fully inserted into the drive assembly, the piston is pressed into the cylinder sufficiently to establish a selected distance so that the piston shaft is in the proper position to engage with a coupling mechanism carried on the driveshaft.

Methods and apparatuses for joining a pumping cartridge to a pump drive

The invention provides a variety of devices for supporting at least a portion of a user's body. In some embodiments, the invention provides a support device which includes a bladder capable of containing a fluid and a post adjacent the bladder. The bladder may form a rolling diaphragm portion with the post such that when a force is applied to the bladder, the rolling diaphragm portion of the bladder rolls along the post decreasing the volume of the bladder. In some embodiments, the invention provides a post which includes a reduced cross-sectional area in comparison to an adjacent region of the post such that the resistance of the rolling diaphragm portion of the bladder to rolling movement along the post due to the applies force decreases as the bladder rolls along the reduced cross-sectional area region. In some embodiments, the support device includes a plurality of bladders and/or a plurality of posts.

Device for supporting a user's body

Certain embodiments of the surgical instruments provided according to the invention utilize a channel positioned adjacent to and downstream of a liquid jet-forming nozzle such that at least a portion of the liquid jet passes at least one of within the channel and adjacent to and along the length of at least a portion of a longitudinally-oriented opening in the channel, when the instrument is in operation. The use of such channels in certain embodiments of the inventive surgical instruments can enable the instruments to provide enhanced control over the depth and degree of cutting and/or ablation of tissue; and/or can provide improved and enhanced functionality for cleaning, debriding, and/or trimming and cutting a tissue/surface; and/or can provide longer effective liquid jet beam cutting/ablation lengths by reducing the degree of dispersion of the jet along its length.

Liquid jet surgical instruments incorporating channel openings aligned along the jet beam

A device is provided for use to securely clamp a medical mechanism to a person carrier, such as a lifter, stretcher, gurney, or the like, to facilitate providing medical treatment to a person during transport of the person to a medical facility, The device has an open condition released from the person carrier and a closed condition whereupon it clamps very securely to a rail of the person carrier; with the material of the person carrier facilitating securing to the person carrier the device as well as the medical mechanism to be secured to the person carrier. The medical mechanism may, by way of example, be a relatively heavy mechanism for providing infusate to the person or a relatively heavy control for the infusate providing device. No matter what it could be severely damaging to the person on the carrier, medical personnel and transport personnel if a relatively heavy mechanism loosened from the person carrier and moved uncontrolled around the transport.

Clamp

The invention provides a variety of surgical instruments for forming a liquid jet, which are useful for performing a wide variety of surgical procedures. In some embodiments, the invention provides surgical liquid jet instruments having a pressure lumen and an evacuation lumen, where the pressure lumen includes at least one nozzle for forming a liquid jet and where the evacuation lumen includes a jet-receiving opening for receiving the liquid jet when the instrument is in operation. In some embodiments, the pressure lumen and the evacuation lumen of the surgical liquid jet instruments are constructed and positionable relative to each other so that the liquid comprising the liquid jet, and any tissue or material entrained by the liquid jet can be evacuated through the evacuation lumen without the need for an external source of suction. The invention also provides a variety of surgical liquid jet instruments that are constructed and configured specifically for use in a surrounding liquid environment or a surrounding gaseous environment. The invention also provides a variety of surgical liquid jet instruments that are rotatably deployable from an undeployed position, for insertion into the body of a patient, to a deployed position, in which there is a separation distance between the liquid jet nozzle and the jet-receiving opening that defines a liquid jet path length. The invention also provides surgical methods utilizing the inventive surgical liquid jet instruments, and methods for forming components of the surgical liquid jet instruments.

Fluid jet surgical instruments

Pumping cartridges useful for medical and surgical pumping and infusion procedures. In one aspect, a series of pumping cartridges include cylinders and pistons which have a sealing component including a circumferential, flared sealing flange and can be configured to enable the pumping cartridge to generate high liquid pumping pressures. Many of the pumping cartridges can be configured to be detachable from a pump drive unit and disposable after a single use. Some pistons include or at least partially form a valve and/or are relatively movable with respect to a connected piston rod. Valves include a valve seat and a movable sealing element able to create a seal capable of withstanding differences in fluid pressures thereacross of at least about 1,000 psi. The movable sealing element is concave in shape, and may be curved for improved sealing performance. Methods for pumping or infusing a liquid for delivery to the body of a patient or a surgical or medical instrument.

High pressure pumping cartridges for medical and surgical pumping and infusion applications

Certain embodiments of the present invention provide a series of surgical instruments utilizing liquid jets for cutting, ablating, debriding, washing, etc., tissues and/or other materials from the interior and/or exterior surface of the body of a patient. Certain embodiments of the surgical instruments provided according to the invention utilize a channel positioned adjacent to and downstream of a liquid jet-forming nozzle such that at least a portion of the passes at least one of within the channel and adjacent to and along the length of at least a portion of a longitudinally-oriented opening in the channel, when the instrument is in operation. The present invention provides a series of devices for performing surgical procedures utilizing electrodes for performing electrocautery on a tissue of the body of a patient. The invention includes, in one aspect, a series of devices comprising surgical instruments providing at least one electrode for performing electrocautery, and, in another aspect, provides a method for cutting and cauterizing tissue with a surgical instrument. In yet another aspect, the invention involves a method for detecting the location of a bleeding vessel in a liquid-filled, visually monitored surgical field of a patient and for electrocauterizing the vessel to stop the bleeding before visualization of the surgical field is compromised. Preferred surgical instruments according to the invention also include operable components for forming a liquid cutting jet for cutting or ablating tissue of a patient and/or for providing a rotating, tissue contacting component for cutting, grinding, ablating, etc. tissue during a surgical procedure. Some surgical instruments, according to the invention, include one or more liquid conducting lumen therein for transporting and/or removing a liquid from a surgical operating field, which lumen, in some cases, are selectively coated with a layer of an electrically insulating material so that certain, selected, uncoated regions of an external surface of the lumen can act as an electrocautery electrode of the instrument.

Surgical instruments with integrated electrocautery

The present invention provides a series of devices useful for surgical procedures utilizing rotatable components for grinding, cutting, ablating, polishing, drilling, screwing, etc., tissues of the body of a patient. The invention includes, in one aspect, a series of devices comprising surgical instruments including rotatable shafts, and surgical components drivable by the shafts that can be utilized for contact with tissue in a surgical operating field. Some preferred surgical instruments provided by the invention utilize a liquid jet-driven rotor mechanism for driving rotation of the rotatable shaft. Some preferred instruments provided by the invention include both a liquid jet-driven rotor mechanism and a nozzle at the distal end of the instrument for forming a liquid cutting jet for cutting or ablating tissue of a patient. Such instruments can include a liquid flow directing valve therein that includes a pressure-tight sealing component comprising a sealing element that is constructed and arranged to be slidably moveable within a cylinder of the valve. The invention provides methods for utilizing the inventive surgical instruments in surgical procedures involving both cutting or ablating tissue of a patient with a liquid cutting jet and grinding, cutting, or ablating tissue with a rotating surface of a surgical instrument.

Liquid jet-powered surgical instruments
