A structure comprising an inorganic oxide substrate having thereon an organic polymer layer, characterized in that interposed between the substrate and the organic polymer layer there is an adhesion promoting layer of a block or graft copolymer, one component of which is compatible with the organic polymer and a second of which is a poly(vinyl phenol) component that is capable of hydrogen bonding with the inorganic oxide substrate is disclosed. In preferred embodiments, the substrate is a semiconductor material and the adhesion promoter facilitates the adhesion of a photoresist or protective coating.

Block and graft copolymers as adhesion promoters

Novel blends have been discovered comprising: (A) a polyamide; (B) a polymer that is miscible with polystrene; and (C) a compatibilizer comprising a copolymer having repeating units derived from an aromatic vinyl compound monomer and repeating units derived from vinylphenol monomers, wherein at least about 50% of said aromatic vinyl compound monomers are styrene monomeric units. The blends show improvements in mechanical properties as compared to similar blends without the compatibilizer.

Compatible polyamide blends

There is disclosed a blend of certain polyesters and polymers that are miscible with polystyrene, such as polyphenylene oxide. The blend is characterized by the presence of a compatibilizing amount of a copolymer having repeating units derived from an aromatic vinyl compound monomer and a vinylphenol monomer. The polyester is thermoplastic and is characterized in that the diacid component of the polyester includes aromatic groups and the diol component comprises at least about 20 percent by weight of a noncyclic, aliphatic diol.

Compatible polyester blends

A miscible blend composition comprising (a) a polyamide having a melting point greater than about 175.degree. C. or is amorphous and (b) a vinylphenol containing polymer. The blend is particularly useful for packaging applications due to its chemical resistance and clarity.

Miscible blends of polyamides and vinylphenol containing polymers

Novel diene/methacrylate ester block polymers, especially tertiary butyl methacrylate ester block polymers are uniquely prepared at near ambient temperatures and capable of being hydrolyzed and neutralized to yield the corresponding methacrylic acid and methacrylic acid salt (ionomer) derivatives. The compositions are usefully employed in the preparation of thermoplastic elastomers, adhesives and laminating films.

Block polymers containing methacrylic acid and derivatives thereof

Novel methacrylate ester block polymers comprising both a hydrolyzable and a non-hydrolyzable ester functionality are capable of being partially hydrolyzed and neutralized to yield the corresponding methacrylic acid and methacrylic acid salt (ionomer) derivatives. The compositions are usefully employed in the preparation of thermoplastic elastomers, adhesives and laminating films.

Block polymers of methacrylates

Polymers such as phenyltrimethoxysilylterminated polystyrene are prehydrolyzed and then condensed with a metal alkoxide using acid catalyzed sol-gel reactions. The product is an organic/inorganic composite in which a metal polycondensate core is covalently bonded to a plurality of organic arms. The core has more metal atoms than heretofore obtainable. The process of this invention provides a means for introducing an inorganic phase into an organic polymer and maintaining solubility of the resulting composite in organic solvents. The products of this invention have a larger organic phase than products discussed in the literature. They also have residual chemical reactivity.

Organic/inorganic composites

Living polymers endcapped with a silicon containing group can be prepared by reacting a living, anionic polymer with an endcapping agent such as p-(chloromethylphenyl)trimethoxysilane. Such materials possess narrow molecular weight distributions, predictable molecular weights, and high functionality. The functionality is controlled by employing either a monofunctional (f=1) or difunctional (f=2) initiator. The endcapped, unifunctional products of this invention can serve as stable precursors for the preparation of soluble, branched polymers, and the difunctional products of this invention serve as efficient, water curable coatings.
