A monolith catalyst carrier for insertion in a tube of a tubular reactor has a container for holding a monolith catalyst in use. The container has a bottom surface closing the container and a skirt extending upwardly from the bottom surface of the container to a position below the location of a seal and spaced therefrom. The skirt is positioned such that there is a space between an outer surface of the monolith catalyst and the skirt. A seal is located at or near a top surface of the monolith catalyst and extends from the monolith catalyst by a distance which extends beyond an outer surface of the skirt.

Monolithic reactor

In a process for converting synthesis gas to higher hydrocarbons in a tubular reactor, reactants are introduced through an inlet of the reactor. The reactants are passed downwardly through at least one tube to an upper surface of a catalyst carrier where they pass into a passage defined by an inner perforated wall of a catalyst container before passing radially through the catalyst bed towards the perforated outer wall. Reaction occurs as the synthesis gas contacts the catalyst. Unreacted reactant and product is passed out of the container through a perforated outer wall thereof and then upwardly between a skirt and an outer wall of the container, followed by being directed over the end of the skirt and downwardly between the skirt and the reactor tube where heat transfer takes place. These steps are repeated for any subsequent catalyst carrier, then product is removed from an outlet of the reactor.

Fischer-tropsch process in a radial reactor

In a process for converting synthesis gas to methanol, gas is introduced through an inlet of a tubular reactor. Reactants pass downwardly through at least one reactor tube to an upper surface of a catalyst carrier and into a passage defined by an inner perforated wall of a carrier container before passing radially through the catalyst bed towards a perforated outer container wall. Reaction occurs as synthesis gas contacts the catalyst. Unreacted reactant and product pass out of the container through the outer container wall and then upwardly between the inner surface of a container skirt and an outer annular container wall, and then over the end of the skirt and downwardly between the outer surface of the skirt and the inner surface of the reactor tube where heat transfer takes place. The steps are repeated at any subsequent catalyst carrier and then product is removed from the reactor outlet.

Process for the synthesis of methanol

In a catalyst carrier for insertion in a tube of a reactor, an annular container holds the catalyst in use and has a perforated inner wall defining a tube, a perforated outer wall, a top surface closing the annular container and a bottom surface closing the annular container. A surface closes the bottom of the tube formed by the inner wall of the annular container. A skirt extends upwardly from the perforated outer wall of the annular container from a position at or near the bottom surface to a position below the location of a seal located at or near the top surface and extending from the container by a distance which extends beyond an outer surface of the skirt.

Vessel for containing catalyst in a tubular reactor

Process for converting synthesis gas to hydrocarbons in a slurry reactor in the presence of a Fischer-Tropsch catalyst comprising cobalt and zinc oxide. The process is carried out by a) activating the Fischer-Tropsch catalyst with a reducing gas consisting of hydrogen and an inert gas at a temperature between 330 and 400&#xb0; C., and b) contacting the activated Fischer-Tropsch catalyst from step a) with synthesis gas in the slurry reactor in order to convert the synthesis gas into hydrocarbons.

Fischer tropsch process

Process for converting synthesis gas to hydrocarbons which comprises contacting a gaseous stream comprising synthesis gas, at an elevated temperature and pressure, with a suspension comprising a particulate Fischer-Tropsch catalyst having a particle size in the range 5 microns to 500 microns, suspended in a liquid medium, in a system comprising at least one high shear mixing zone and a reactor vessel. The suspension and the gaseous stream is passed through the high shear mixing zone(s) wherein the gaseous stream is broken down into gas bubbles. The suspension having gas bubbles dispersed therein is discharged from the high shear mixing zone(s) into the reactor vessel, and suspension comprising the particulate Fischer-Tropsch catalyst suspended in the liquid medium and liquid hydrocarbon products is withdrawn from the reactor vessel and at least a portion of the suspension is recycled to the high shear mixing zone(s) via an external conduit at a flow rate of at least 10,000 mof suspension per hour. A side stream from the suspension flowing through the external conduit is taken and passed directly to a filtration unit.

Process for separating liquid hydrocarbons from a particulate fisher-tropsch catalyst

Process for the conversion of synthesis gas to hydrocarbons, at least a portion of which are liquid at ambient temperature and pressure, by contacting the synthesis gas at an elevated temperature and pressure with a suspension comprising a particulate Fischer-Tropsch catalyst suspended in a liquid medium, in a reactor system comprising at least one high shear mixing zone and a reactor vessel. The process comprises passing the suspension and synthesis gas through the high shear mixing zone(s) where the synthesis gas is broken down into gas bubbles and/or irregularly shaped gas voids; discharging suspension having gas bubbles and/or irregularly shaped gas voids dispersed therein from the high shear mixing zone(s) into the reactor vessel; and introducing a liquid coolant into the reactor system.

Fischer-tropsch process in the presence of a coolant introduced into the reactor system

The present invention relates to a process for the production of methanol from a hydrocarbon feedstock comprising: contacting a vaporous mixture comprising the feedstock and steam in a steam reforming zone with a catalyst effective for catalysis of at least one reforming reaction; recovering from the reforming zone a synthesis gas mixture comprising carbon oxides, hydrogen and methane; supplying material of the synthesis gas mixture to a methanol synthesis zone charged with a methanol synthesis catalyst and maintained under methanol synthesis conditions; recovering from the methanol synthesis zone a product gas mixture comprising methanol and unreacted material of the synthesis gas mixture; supplying material of the product gas mixture to a methanol recovery zone maintained under methanol recovery conditions; recovering from the methanol recovery zone a crude methanol product stream and a vaporous steam comprising unreacted material of the synthesis gas mixture; separating material of the synthesis gas mixture into a first hydrogen-rich stream and a second hydrogen-depleted stream comprising carbon oxides and methane; supplying at least part of the first hydrogen-rich stream to the steam reforming zone as fuel; and recycling at least part of the second hydrogen-depleted stream to the steam reforming zone to form part of the mixture of the vaporous mixture comprising the feedstock and steam and to a plant constructed and arranged so as to be operable in accordance with the process.
