A method and system for customizing note flags allows a user to change the look or 'feel' of a note flag. A user can be provided with several options in order to create note flags that are visually distinguishable from one another. In this way, the note flags can be used to visually distinguish a first note or first set of notes from a second note or second set of notes. The method and system can also link note flags with a particular action or operation within a document editing module or with action or an operation in another application program relative to a document editing module. In other words, a note flag can initiate an operation in another application program or within the document editing module (or both) when a particular note flag is selected by a user.

A method and system in a document viewing control for laying out an invisible page grid based on various criteria, including whether the pages of a document are fixed, contain reflowable content, whether the fixed pages are all the same size, and where the user has actively focused a page when a new layout needs to be generated, which may be anytime a user changes the number of pages to display. Upon such a change, a mechanism determines page sizes based on whether the focused page has flow or fixed content. A layout mechanism computes the grid based on the number of pages (columns) to display across. For documents with mixed-sized and/or mixed flow and fixed pages, rows of the grid are determined from the active page to the start of the document, and from the active page's row to the end of the document. A method and system link page content with a media file and display these links during playback of the media file. In other words, the present invention can link notes stored in an electronic document with media such as audio stored in an audio file. As media is played back from the media file, the present invention can display visual indicators adjacent to or over page content so that a user can see how page content relates to the media file. According to one exemplary aspect of the present invention, page content can be highlighted when the page content has a relationship with the media that is being played. That is, page content can be highlighted at different times as the recorded live information from a media file such as audio from an audio file is being played back.

Methods and systems are provided for automatically adjusting printing settings to optimize the fit of text, data and/or images on printed pages. Once selected text or data is designated for printing, a determination is made as to whether the selected text or data may be printed on a single page or whether multiple pages are required. The best fit of the text or data on a single or multiple pages is accomplished by incrementally adjusting a number of different print settings until an optimum fit of the text or data is achieved on a single page or on a set of pages. Print settings include margins, scale, and orientation.

A method and system are provided for automatically sizing computer-generated workspaces to allow users to enter data anywhere in an available workspace. A calculation is performed to determine the total available workspace displayable by a display device based on the size of the display device. The space required to display user interface objects, such as toolbars and task panes, is subtracted from the total available workspace, and the remaining available workspace is designated as the displayed workspace. The workspace is displayed without the use of scroll bars to create a user experience that the displayed workspace is the total available workspace. Data may be entered anywhere in the displayed workspace without regard to any preformatted page sizes or margins. If data is entered outside the displayed workspace, scroll bars are then displayed to indicate the presence of content outside the displayed workspace. As additional content, such as graphical user interfaces is displayed, or when the user's display device changes, the displayed workspace is recalculated.

Automatically sized computer-generated workspaces

A document viewer control that is hosted by another computer program to provide that program with document viewing functionality, including enabling user interaction with the content. An interface provides the program with plug-in access to document viewing functionality, including scrolling, zooming, finding, layout, copying and the like. In a first state, toolbar items are displayed in a toolbar area while a document is displayed in a document area. In addition, the document area is expanded to include the now-minimized toolbar area. The menu toolbar item may become semi-transparent during the second viewing state, provides access to viewing options, and also allows the viewing state to be changed back to the first viewing state.

For example, in a meeting scenario where a slide presentation is being displayed, the present invention can automatically insert information relating to the slide presentation into an application program such as a document editing module. Specifically, in this example, the information relating to the slide information can be inserted into the document editing module in one of four different formats: (1) as editable text derived from each slide; (2) an editable image for each slide; (3) a thumbnail image for each slide; (4) a hypertext link to each slide; and (5) any combination thereof.

An action may be associated with the region by selecting an action from a list of actions to associate with the region. The actions performed may be handwriting recognition, adding data to a contacts list, adding data to a task list, and identifying a recognizer for the content. The actions may also include editing data entered in a region.
