Operating a hybrid power system for a machine includes combusting a direct injected gaseous hydrogen fuel in an engine operating an electrical generator, and increasing a load demand of the hybrid power system. Operating the hybrid power system further includes operating an electrical-assist compressor to supply an increased airflow into the engine based on an increased engine power demand to satisfy the increased load demand. Air-fuel equivalence ratio of the engine (so-called 'lambda') is maintained at a ratio of about 2 or greater to limit NOx emissions, and between a hydrogen fuel misfire limit and a hydrogen fuel preignition limit. Related apparatus and control logic is also disclosed.

A power system may include a high-speed flywheel connected to an engine of a machine; a battery; a motor-generator unit (MGU) connected to the engine and the battery; and a turbocharger connected to the engine. One or more of the high-speed flywheel, the battery and the MGU, or the turbocharger may be configured to provide supplemental power to power provided by the engine to operate the machine, or provide replacement power when no power is provided by the engine to operate the machine.

The controller may determine, based on the plurality of sets of potential parameters, a plurality of sets of predicted values, wherein each set of predicted values includes a predicted outlet pressure of a compressor of the VGT and a predicted temperature of an exhaust gas of the engine. The controller may determine respective scores of the plurality of sets of predicted values, and may select, based on the respective scores, a particular set of predicted values of the plurality of sets of predicted values. The controller may thereby control the turbine of the VGT and the ITV.

A cylinder head includes a cylinder head casting having four gas exchange openings formed in a fire deck. A bolt bore and a glow plug bore extend through the cylinder head casting between an upper surface and a lower surface. The four gas exchange openings are arranged at twelve o'clock, three o'clock, six o'clock, and nine o'clock positions, circumferentially around an injector bore center axis. The bolt bore is positioned angularly between the twelve o'clock position and the three o'clock position, and the glow plug bore is positioned angularly between the three o'clock position and the six o'clock position.

A fuel injector assembly includes a fuel injector defining a longitudinal axis extending between a first axial injector end, and a second axial injector end. The fuel injector further includes, between the first axial injector end and the second axial injector end, a first clamp face and a second clamp face defining a middle plane. The fuel injector assembly further includes a clamp having a forked injector portion forming a slot receiving the fuel injector and in contact with each of the first clamp face and the second clamp face, and a bolting portion having a bolt hole formed therein. In one aspect, a method for controlling an internal combustion engine system including an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve and a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT) having a compressor and a turbine includes receiving a plurality of requests for the internal combustion engine system. The method also includes predicting a plurality of expected states of the internal combustion engine system based on the plurality of requests and generating sets of candidate control points for actuating the EGR valve and the VGT based on the plurality of expected states. The method further includes selecting a set of candidate control points that avoids a surge condition of the compressor and based on the selected set of candidate control points, generating commands for actuating the EGR valve and the VGT.

A ducted combustion system is disclosed. The ducted combustion system includes a combustion chamber bound by a flame deck surface of a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and by a piston top surface of a piston disposed within the internal combustion engine. The system includes a fuel injector including a plurality of orifices, the plurality of orifices injecting fuel into the combustion chamber as a plurality of fuel jets. The system includes a duct structure defining a plurality of ducts and disposed within the combustion chamber between the flame deck surface and the piston top surface, the plurality of ducts being disposed such that each of the plurality of fuel jets at least partially enters one of the plurality of ducts upon being injected into the combustion chamber.

A ducted combustion system is disclosed. The ducted combustion system includes a combustion chamber bound by a flame deck surface of a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine and by a piston top surface of a piston disposed within the internal combustion engine. The system includes a fuel injector including one or more orifices, the one or more orifices injecting fuel into the combustion chamber as one or more fuel jets. The system includes one or more ducts disposed within the combustion chamber between the flame deck surface and the piston top surface, the one or more ducts being generally tubular shaped structures and being disposed such that each of the one or more fuel jets at least partially enters one of the one or more ducts upon being injected into the combustion chamber.

A direct injection compression ignition internal combustion engine includes a fuel system having a nozzle extending into a cylinder of the engine and a plurality of spray orifices formed in the nozzle. Each of the spray orifices has an inner diameter dimension of about 0.09 mm or less, and define inter-orifice angles between adjacent spray orifice center axes of about 36&#xb0; or greater such that spray plumes of injected fuel from each of the spray orifices combust within the cylinder according to a non-sooting lifted flame and gas entrainment combustion pattern. Related methodology is also disclosed.
