Formulations comprising an isosorbide-modified unsaturated polyester comprising maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid or maleic anhydride and isosorbide and one or more low profile additives. The formulations exhibit better shrink control in molding compound formulations with standard low profile additives than their non-isosorbide-modified analogues. These isosorbide-modified unsaturated polyester resins may be applied in molding compounds like sheet molding compounds or bulk molding compounds and may be components of fiber reinforced composites or other composite materials.

The present invention is directed to a method for treating cross-linked (cured) filled or untilled unsaturated polyester for deriving an alcohol recycle reactant useful in the synthesis of alcohol-formed derivative products. The first step of the method is the attrition of the cured unsaturated polyester to form particulates thereof. In the next step of the process, at least a fraction of any filler or fiberglass in the cured unsaturated polyester is separated to form a cured unsaturated polyester regrind. The next step is the subjecting of the cured unsaturated polyester regrind to agitated, uncatalyzed or catalyzed glycolysis in the presence of excess glycol and, optionally, a transesterification catalyst under agitation at elevated transesterification temperature. The final step of the process is the recovery of the recycle alcohol reactant for use in the synthesis of alcohol-formed derivative products. The glycolysis reaction is conducted under agitation in order to keep the cured unsaturated polyester regrind solids suspended during the glycolysis reaction. In this regard, establishment of shear conditions should aid in the glycolysis step of the process.

The present invention is based on the unexpected discovery that the low profile additives (LPA) disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,116,917 provide effective shrinkage control when used with various blends of vinyl ester and polyester resin systems. This LPA is unique in that its low profile efficiency is not affected by the different reactivities displayed by blends of vinyl ester resin and polyester resin at different blend ratios. This LPA is equally effective in formulations of all vinyl ester resin, all polyester resin, or any combination of such two resins. The present invention, then, is directed to a thermosettable resinous composition of between about 0 and 95 wt-% of a thermosettable vinyl ester resin; between about 5 and 100 wt-% of a thermosettable polyester resin; and between about 5 and 40 wt-% of a low profile additive comprising a non-gelling, saturated polyester formed from dibasic acid and an EO/PO block copolymer having an EO/PO molar ratio ranging from about 0.1 to 0.9, said polyester having an acid value of greater than about 10. The EO/PO polyether polyol can be built on a combination of diol, triol or other compound with active hydrogen groups, so long as the LPA product does not gel.

The present invention is directed to a thermosettable vinul ester resinous composition and low profile additive.
