A plurality of different structural members for reinforcing a plate-like structure, such as a bushing tip plate for intended use in forming fibers from a fluid material supplied to a bushing assembly, are disclosed. Each reinforcing member includes a body having a first portion for attachment to the structure and a second portion having a profile with a variable height including at least one apex. The body may be integrally formed of a single piece of material, or two or formed from more separate pieces of material bonded or secured together. The body may be T-shaped, L-shaped, or F-shaped in cross-section. The second portion of the body may have an inverted V-shaped profile, an inverted W-shaped profile, or an arcuate profile. The at least one apex may be located at the midpoint or elsewhere along the length of the body.

Reinforcement member for a bushing tip plate and related method

A bushing assembly/support structure arrangement is provided. The arrangement comprises a bushing assembly and a support structure. The bushing arrangement includes a bushing main body comprising at least first and second side walls and a tip plate extending between the side walls. The tip plate contains a plurality of orifices through which molten mineral material flows prior to being attenuated into fibers. The bushing assembly further comprises a first support rail coupled to the main body first side wall, and at least one first bracket having an intermediate member coupled to the main body first side wall. The support structure comprises a bushing frame, and at least one first support strap. The support strap has a first end fixedly coupled to the bushing frame and second end extending toward a first location on the support rail adjacent the first bracket for supporting the bushing assembly.

Bushing assembly/support structure arrangement

A screen comprises an electrically conductive elongate inner screen plate. The inner screen plate has at least one elongate fold therein and at least two elongate divergent surfaces on opposing sides of the fold. Each divergent surface has an upper end and opposing edges tapering downward from the upper end. The upper ends of the divergent surfaces diverge from one another. Each of the divergent surfaces has a plurality of holes therein. The screen further comprises at least two electrically conductive outer screen plates. The outer screen plates are attached to the edges of the divergent surfaces and extend between the divergent surfaces. Each of the outer screen plates has a plurality of holes therein. Another embodiment of the invention is directed toward a glass fiber bushing system comprising a bushing body and a screen within the bushing body. The bushing body has opposing end plates. The screen comprises opposing ends. Each of the ends has an upper portion and a lower portion. The upper portion of each of the ends is attached to one of the end plates. The lower portion of each of the ends is spaced apart from the end plates.

Screen for use in a glass fiber bushing system and bushing system therewith

A bushing including a terminal ear and a method of manufacturing the bushing are disclosed. The bushing includes a bushing body which can include side plates, end plates, a bottom plate, and terminal ears coupled to the bushing body. Clamps are attached to the terminal ears to supply electrical current to the bushing to maintain the glass inside in a liquid state. Each terminal ear includes an upper portion and a lower portion. The upper portion is coupled to a side plate of the bushing. A clamp is attached to the lower portion of the terminal ear. The upper and lower portions are oriented at an angle with respect to each other. Support portions are provided along the side edges of the upper portions of the terminal ears. Support portions stiffen the terminal ear, thereby increasing its resistance to bending and fatigue stresses. Support portions do not contact the bushing and therefore do not directly conduct current to the bushing. Accordingly, the temperature of the support portions during operation of the bushing will be lower than the conducting portion of the terminal ears. Since the support portions operate at a lower temperature, the thermal degradation of the terminal ear is reduced.

A bushing tip plate support assembly for a bushing in a filament forming apparatus is disclosed. The support assembly improves the flatness of the tip section within the spans between the external support and the center support. The filament forming apparatus includes a bushing having a bottom plate from which nozzles or tips depend. The disclosed support assembly is an improvement on the internal support assemblies in conventional bushings because it has several functions. The support assembly includes two vertical dividers mounted in the bushing. The bottom ends of the dividers are welded to the tops of tip plate gussets in the bushing. The dividers are attached to side plates of the bushing as well. An upper portion of each divider serves as an upper side wall for the bushing and defines part of the throat of the bushing into which the molten glass flows. The dividers also include middle and lower portions with perforations through which the glass in the bushing may flow. The openings permit the dividers to thermally mix and homogenize the glass within the bushing. The dividers provide additional tip plate support to conventional tip plate gussets and resistance to long term creep and sag of the bottom plate, especially at the point of maximum deflection of the tip plate.

A heat-absorbing finshield assembly, which is located adjacent the discharge area of a furnace for producing glass fibers, includes fins spaced along a fluid-cooled manifold such that the fins extend between, but not in contact with, the molten glass fibers emerging from the furnace. The fins may have microfins in their bases which are in contact with the cooling fluid. The fins also may be of variable thicknesses relative to each other along the manifold to absorb different quantities of heat from the emerging fibers.

Apparatus for the production of glass filaments is provided comprising a feeder for supplying streams of molten glass to be attenuated into filaments, means for attenuating the streams into filaments and an environmental control means adapted to remove heat from the fiber forming region comprised of a plurality of fin-like members positioned between the streams of molten glass being attenuated into filaments, the first end of said members being permanently secured to a first cooling manifold and the second end of said members being releasably positioned within notches in a second manifold.

Apparatus for producing glass fibers

Apparatus for the production of glass filaments is provided comprising a feeder for supplying streams of molten glass to be attenuated into filaments, means for attenuating the streams into filaments and an environmental control means adapted to remove heat from the fiber forming region comprised of a plurality of fin-like members positioned between the streams of molten glass being attenuated into filaments, the first end of said members being permanently secured to a first cooling manifold and the second end of said members being releasably positioned within tapered notches in a second manifold.

A method for producing fibers from molten mineral material in which the heat sink provided by air induced to flow in the direction of the bushing by the moving fibers is replaced during a period of fiber forming interruption by a secondary flow of air directed toward the bushing during the interruption.

Apparatus and method for mixing molten glass as it flows from a bushing block into a bushing is disclosed. The bushing block is divided into a plurality of sections and the glass is flowed in a plurality of streams for intermixing prior to entry into the bushing.

Bushing blocks

Improved construction for bushings used to produce glass fibers is provided. Such bushings commonly have thin side and end walls of precious metal defining a glass-melting chamber, with a bottom in which fiber-forming tips are located. Refractory material is located around the side and end walls. When the bushings are heated to operating temperatures, the metal walls tend to expand more than the refractory material and, particularly with larger bushings, the walls can buckle and crack since full expansion of the walls is prevented by the refractory material. To overcome this, it has been found that the bushings can be constructed with space between the metal walls and the refractory, with the space equalling the difference in expansion of the two materials. The space is formed by layers of heat-removable material, such as wax which melts out as the bushings are heated. When the bushings are at operating temperature then, the metal walls expand into the space and come into contact with the surrounding refractory material.
