The present invention includes a process for producing treated filler that includes (a) treating a slurry that includes untreated filler, where the untreated filler has not been previously dried, with a treating composition that includes a treating agent, thereby forming a treated filler slurry, and (b) drying the treated filler slurry to produce treated filler. The treating agent can include a polymer having (i) at least one first group that interacts with the untreated filler and (ii) at least one second group that interacts with a rubber matrix into which the treated filler is incorporated. The present invention also is directed to treated filler prepared by the process, as well as rubber compounding compositions and tires including the treated filler.

The present invention is directed to a separation medium comprising rotary dried or spray dried precipitated silica. The silica has a pore surface area P wherein logP&#x3e;2.2, and the ratio of BET to CTAB is at least 1.0 measured prior to any surface modification of the silica. The present invention is further directed to a method of separating suspended or dissolved materials from a fluid stream, comprising contacting the stream with the separation medium described above.

Described herein is microporous precipitated silica having the following physico-chemical parameters: a CTAB surface area of 50 to 300 square meters/gram, a BET/CTAB ratio of &#x2267;1.3, and a relative breadth &#x3b3; of pore size distribution of &#x2266;3.5. The precipitated silica can also have a Sears number of from 10 to 28 and a Sears number/CTAB ratio of &#x2266;0.16. Also described herein are vulcanizable and vulcanized elastomer compositions, e.g., tires, containing the microporous precipitated silica.

Describes a composition comprising a mixture of (1) a major amount of calcium hypochlorite, e.g., hydrated calcium hypochlorite, and (2) a minor amount of calcium hypochlorite-compatible hydrophobic additive (other than discrete particulate Group IIA or IIIA metal stearates) in amounts sufficient to provide the composition with reduced hydrophilic properties. The composition has a solution rate in water at standard conditions that is less than the calcium hypochlorite used to prepare the composition, but sufficient for the intended application. Describes also calcium hypochlorite compositions in which the hydrophobic additive is an organo-silicon material, or a metal oxide, e.g., amorphous precipitated silica, treated with a hydrophobizing agent, such as an organo-silicon material, e.g., an organo-silane and/or organo-siloxane material.

Described is an improved process for producing chemically treated fillers by using a certain combination of functionalizing and hydrophobizing agents in an aqueous suspension of inorganic oxide having a pH of 2.5 or less and increasing the pH of the suspension after chemically treating the filler.

The present invention is related to treated filler and processes for producing said treated filler. Untreated filler slurry can be treated with a treating material and, optionally, a coupling material and then subjected to conventional drying method(s), to produce the treated filler of the invention. Treated filler has a wide variety of applications including but not limited to battery separators and rubber compositions such as tires.

Described are hydrophobic particulate inorganic oxides useful for reinforcing polymeric composition, e.g., rubber. The materials are characterized by: (a) the substantial absence of functional groups capable of chemical reaction with rubber; (b) a BET surface area of in the range of from 40 to 350 m/g; (c) a hydroxyl content in the range of 2 to 15 OH/nm; (d) a carbon content in the range of from 0.1 to 6 percent by weight that is substantially non-extractable; (e) a pH in the range of from 3 to 10; (f) an M1 Standard White Area less than 0.4 percent and (g) a methanol wettability of from 15 to 45 percent. Compositions such as polymers, cured organic rubber articles, master batches and slurries containing the hydrophobic fillers are also described.

Described are fillers, e.g., inorganic oxides, that have been chemically treated to have a carbon content of greater than 1 weight percent, a mercapto content of at least 0.15 weight percent, a Silane Conversion Index of at least 0.3 and a Standard Reinforcement Index of 4 or more. Polymeric compositions that contain such treated fillers are also described.
