A power conversion system allows for redundant starting and generating functions and eliminates equipment normally found in a conventional system so that size and weight are reduced.

Redundant starting/generating system

A secondary power system for an aircraft utilizes a variable frequency electrical distribution system that provides power to one or more loads that can tolerate distortion components. In addition, a DC distribution system is coupled to the variable frequency distribution system and is isolated from a fixed frequency electrical distribution. Distortion caused by rectification for the DC system is isolated from the fixed frequency system, thereby improving the power quality in the fixed frequency system.

Aircraft secondary power system

A starting/generating system for a small aircraft having engines which can be battery started includes a permanent magnet generator (PMG) which can directly supply frequency-insensitive loads and a power converter for developing regulated DC power from the output of the PMG.

PMG main engine starter/generator system

A starting system for a prime mover coupled to a generator includes a step-up inverter which converts DC power at a first voltage into AC power at a second, higher voltage. Halfwave pulses in the AC power are selectively applied to the generator by a pulse-population inverter coupled to the step-up inverter such that the generator is operated as a motor to supply motive starting power to the prime mover.

Starting system for a prime mover

An overvoltage protection circuit utilizes the fault current sensing capabilities of a differential protection circuit in combination with a shunting circuit to protect a power generating system against an overvoltage condition. The circuit offers the combined advantage of protecting attached load equipment from the harmful effects of an overvoltage condition while also ensuring rapid deexcitation of a generator.
