Apparatus embodiments of the invention are disclosed for requesting power via a wired interface. In example embodiments, a pull-down circuit in the apparatus acting as a power consumer when there is no energy in the apparatus, is connected via a configuration line over a cable to a power provider device. The apparatus may be in a power down mode, it may have an empty battery, or it may have no battery. The pull-down circuit is configured to use energy from the configuration line to pull down a voltage on the configuration line, to signal the power provider device to provide power over another line of the cable to the apparatus.

The apparatus may include an electrical connector comprising a power supply pin and at least one control pin. The apparatus may further include a protective element configured to change a state of the at least one control pin to cause the power supply pin to become inactive. The protective element may be integrated with the electrical connector and/or integrated at one or more locations along the length of a cable.

Protection of cables and connectors

There is disclosed a method comprising providing a first signal to an apparatus comprising a protection circuit and an output for providing electric power. The protection circuit comprises at least an overdischarge detection element and a discharging control output. The first signal is used to change a voltage level at an input of the overdischarge detection element of the protection circuit. The change of the voltage level at the input of overdischarge detection element is detected, and a second signal is provided at the discharging control output to switch off the output of the apparatus. There is also disclosed an apparatus comprising a protection circuit comprising at least an overdischarge detection element and a discharging control output. The overdischarge detection element is configured for detecting the change of the voltage level at the input of the overdischarge detection element, and for providing a second signal at the discharging control output to switch off the output of the apparatus.

Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, are provided for communications control in a dual row connector. In one aspect there is provided a method. The method may include coupling a first data connector including a pair of communication control pins and another pair of communication control pins, wherein the pair further comprises a first communication control pin located at a first row of the first data connector and a second communication control pin located at a second row of the data connector, wherein the other pair further comprises a third communication control pin located at the first row of the first data connector and a fourth communication control pin located at the second row of the first data connector.
