A method for preparing guanidino acetic acid involves reacting cyanamide and glycine in an aqueous reaction mixture in the presence of a base. The ammonia content in the reaction mixture is controlled to be below 20 g/L, and the dicyandiatrade content in the reaction mixture is kept below 5 wt.-%.

The present invention pertains to a process for preparing 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid (HMB) or a salt thereof, the method comprising (a) reacting isobutylene oxide with cyanide in order to obtain 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyronitrile, and (b) hydrolyzing the 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyronitrile obtained in step (a) in order to obtain HMB, wherein hydrolysis step (b) is performed using either at least one nitrilase enzyme or, alternatively, using a combination of enzymes, said combination comprising at least one nitrile hydratase and at least one amidase.

A modified method for preparing guanidino acetic acid (GAA) involves reacting cyanamide with an excess molar amount of glycine in an aqueous reaction mixture, in the presence of a base. The method avoids high molar amounts of base or acid for pH control, and maintains the reaction selectivity and product yields.

The present invention pertains to a process for preparing guanidino acetic acid (GAA) from cyanamide and glycine in alkaline process solution, in which anionic impurities are removed from the process solution by electrodialysis.
