Technologies and techniques for operating an assistance system in a motor vehicle with which a driving a shoulder by the motor vehicle is detected by means of at least one detection device in the assistance system, and with which a control signal is generated by means of an electronic computing device in the assistance system for engaging with a functional unit in the motor vehicle. In some embodiments, an obstacle is detected based on environmental data and a risk of collision is determined in consideration of driving state data. Further, an evasion trajectory for preventing a collision of the motor vehicle with the obstacle is determined. The driver assistance system is configured to detect another oncoming vehicle for which the risk of collision is greater than a predefined first threshold value as the obstacle. Further, the driver assistance system is configured to check whether a control action of a driver of the motor vehicle is guiding same along the determined evasion trajectory and, if this is not the case, to modify the control action of the driver automatically such that the motor vehicle is guided along the determined evasion trajectory by the modified control action.

A method for terminating driving on the road shoulder by a transportation vehicle includes detection by a detection unit that the transportation vehicle is situated at least partially on a road shoulder, determination of a steering intensity of a manual steering maneuver, and assignment of one of at least two predetermined steering codes to the steering maneuver by a computing unit as a function of the steering intensity. An automatic intervention into a transportation vehicle control is carried out as a function of the assigned steering code.

In a method for ending shoulder driving, it is detected by means of a detection unit of a motor vehicle that a wheel is located on a shoulder. By means of a sensor unit, a driver's reaction is recorded, and by means of a computing unit, the driver's reaction is assigned to one of at least two intensity classes. By means of a control unit, an intervention in controlling the vehicle is undertaken counteracting the driver's reaction when the driver's reaction has been assigned to a first intensity class, and an intervention supporting the driver's reaction is undertaken when the driver's reaction has been assigned to a second intensity class.
