An electric machine unit has an electric machine with two phase groups of at least one phase each and having a power converter, the power converter having two half-bridge groups of at least one half-bridge in each case, each phase group being assigned one half-bridge group, so that one half-bridge is provided per phase connection of the electrical machine. The power converter has DC voltage terminals which are configured for connection to an energy storage, the phase terminals of a first phase group each being connected via an AC switch to the respectively associated half-bridge of a first half-bridge group, the phase terminals of a second phase group each being connected to the respectively associated half-bridge of a second half-bridge group, DC-voltage-side terminals of the half-bridges of the second half-bridge group each being connected to the DC terminals via a DC switch.

An overvoltage protection circuit for an electric machine has a series connection of at least two overvoltage protection units, each having a switching unit connected in parallel. Each overvoltage protection unit includes at least one overvoltage protection component that limits a voltage, dropping across this component, to a component voltage limit. At least one of the overvoltage protection units includes at least two overvoltage protection components. A voltage tap is provided between two of overvoltage protection components. A method of checking the overvoltage protection circuit includes detecting a voltage present at the overvoltage protection circuit, switching the switching units into different switching configurations and determining a measured value of a voltage present at the voltage tap in each of the switching configurations, comparing the measured values in each case to an associated comparative value, and determining the functionality of the overvoltage protection circuit based on comparison result.

Method and processing unit for checking an overvoltage protection circuit for an electric machine, and converter arrangement

An activation system for operating an electric machine includes a control circuit device for activating a rotor winding, and having a highside switch, a semiconductor component, and a de-excitation switch. A first terminal of the rotor winding is connectable to a positive supply terminal via the highside switch and to a negative supply terminal via the semiconductor component. A second terminal of the rotor winding is connectable to the negative supply terminal via the de-excitation switch. The activation system is configured to attain a secure state, when at least one fault is present, by disconnecting the rotor winding from the positive supply terminal and/or by de-exciting the rotor winding. A diagnosis may be carried out using an additional highside switch supplied with power via another activation circuit, and/or a fault detection circuit is provided, whose output signal does not change during a de-excitation.
