An on-gimbal telescope pointing assembly can include a head mirror operable to rotate to adjust an elevation angle of the pointing assembly and an all-reflective telescope operable to rotate to adjust an azimuth angle of the pointing assembly. The all-reflective telescope can include a fold mirror defining an output coude path of the all-reflective telescope. The pointing assembly can be operable to rotate about the coude path such that receiving optics can remain fixed while the pointing assembly rotates.

On-gimbal telescope pointing assembly

A method and a system for optimizing the alignment of an optical system, such as a telescope, using a multi-degree-of freedom (DOF) actuator/hexapod and star field images. The method iteratively adjusts the hexapod in all DOFs using the damped least squares (DLS) optimization algorithm and dynamically changes the size of pixel windows to measure ensquared energy (ES) as a closed loop feedback.

A thermal-mechanical linear actuator can include a first stage comprising one of a positive coefficient of thermal expansion ('CTE') material or a negative CTE material and a second stage comprising the other of the positive CTE material or the negative CTE material. The second stage can be at least partially inserted into the first stage. The actuator can further comprise a thermal isolator disposed between the first stage and the second stage to thermally isolate the first stage from the second stage. Heat inputs can be provided where the heat inputs can control the temperature of the first and second stages independently. A hyperbolic meta material can be wrapped or coated around the first stage.

In certain examples the multi-element transform optic includes a first cylindrical optical element having positive optical power in a first axis, a second optical element having negative optical power in the first axis, and a third toroidal optical element having positive optical power in the first axis and either positive or negative optical power in a second axis that is orthogonal to the first axis. A method comprises operating a remote sensing vehicle comprising a host bus platform and a variable pitch instrument platform movably coupled to the host bus platform in at least one degree of freedom. A remote sensing vehicle comprises a host bus platform and a variable pitch instrument platform for scanning or data collection of a target surface, and an dynamic coupling device (e.g., a gimbal(s)) movably coupling the variable pitch instrument platform to the host bus platform in at least one degree of freedom.
