Causes of the failure are determined, and device attributes are received. These causes and attributes are then used to determine an alternative authentication process. The device is authenticated by using this alternative authentication process.

Additionally, the system includes a network operator for receiving a request from a requesting device to access a wireless network, accessing the database to determine if the requesting device is authorized to access the wireless network, formatting data according to the attributes of the requesting device, and providing the formatted data to the requesting device.

The method includes receiving a first identifier of a device and receiving a second identifier of a base station. Furthermore, the method includes determining if the device is authorized to authenticate onto the network from the base station based on an evaluation of the first and second identifiers. Additionally, the method includes authorizing the device to authenticate onto the network when it is determined that the device is authorized to receive service at the base station.

A method and system for securely conveying patient medical information to a medical service person is described. The conveyance may be conditional upon authentication of a unique code associated with a patient apparatus and a unique code associated with a medical service person apparatus. The patient medical information may be stored in a network server accessible by a medical information provider and conveyed in encrypted form to a medical service person apparatus via a patient apparatus. The medical information may be conveyed to the patient apparatus via a cellular communication and then conveyed to the medical service person's apparatus via a short-range direct wireless connection such as BLUETOOTH or Wi-Fi. Once present on the medical service person's apparatus, the medical information may decrypted and displayed.

In one embodiment, a header of a packet is modified to include an identifier that identifies a manner in which the packet should be subject to a particular set of a plurality of sets of rules. The particular set of rules dictates how the packet is to be handled. Further, in one embodiment, the packet is communicated to a routing component, and the routing component is configured to reference the identifier to determine which, if any, of the plurality of sets of rules to apply to the packet.

Systems and methods are provided for controlling a media host device from a mobile voice device. In accordance with a method of the present invention, a call is received from the mobile voice device. A portion of an electronic programming guide is obtained and verbally provided to the mobile voice device in response to the call. A verbal selection associated with the electronic programming guide is received from the mobile voice device and communicated to the media host device through a command encompassing the verbal selection.

A radio access network dynamically compiles history data regarding mobile wireless devices that tend to fail successful ranging, e.g., establishment of Layer 1 communication with a radio access node or base station. The history data is obtained from messages sent from the mobile device to the network which contain a count indicating the number of times the device has failed a ranging attempt. If the history (or count) data indicates that a wireless device has experienced ranging failures exceeding a threshold number of failures, the base station responsively blocks the device from attempting any additional ranging for a period of time. The period of time can be short-term period of time or a long term period of time. The methods avoid excessive use of air interface resources by excluding wireless devices which are unable to successfully range. That is, 'bad' or 'problem' wireless devices are excluded from access to the network.
