Polyolefins incorporating hindered phenol groups covalently bound thereto are disclosed. The hindered phenols are covalently bound to the polyolefin through a residue of an alkenyl compound having a carboxylic acid and/or anhydride on the polyolefin. Such polyolefins can be prepared by reacting the following components together under heat: (a) a polyolefin; (b) an alkenyl compound having a carboxylic acid and/or anhydride; and (c) a hindered phenol reagent that can react with the carboxylic acid and/or anhydride of the alkenyl compound; to produce a polyolefin having hindered phenol groups covalently bound thereto. Reactive compounding of such components allows preparation of such polyolefins in a continuous process and in a single reaction step.

Polyolefins having the same or different functional groups covalently bound to the polyolefin, such as polyolefins having hindered phenol groups bound thereto, can be prepared by from a maleic anhydride modified polyolefin, with or without a coupling agent, and a hindered phenol reagent under heat, e.g., by heating the components to at least about 170° C., such as by reactive extrusion. A polyolefin having hindered phenol groups can be added to the components as a stabilizer prior to or during reacting the components together under heat.

Melt stable polyaryletherketoneketone are prepared from a reactive, lower molecular weight polyaryletherketoneketone having an ultraviolet absorbance at 455 nm of at least 0.185 when measured in 0.1% solution in dichloroacetic acid.

Reactive processing of polyaryletherketones

Compositions and methods for a melt processable semicrystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) incorporating phthalazinone and 4,4'-biphenol as comonomer units are described herein. The polymers are resistant to and insoluble in common organic solvents and liquids as well as in aggressive organic solvents such as chloroform and chlorinated liquids. The polymers are melt processable via techniques such as extrusion, injection molding, and compression molding. The semicrystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) containing phthalazinone comonomer units have properties which make them suitable for manufacturing high temperature resistant molded systems and other articles.

A process for producing a solution blend of a polybenzimidazole (PBI) and a polyetherketoneketone (PEKK). The PBI is mixed with sulfuric acid at a temperature between 40&#xb0; C. and 80&#xb0; C. for 30 minutes to 2 hours to produce a PBI solution then cooled to room temperature to form a cooled PBI solution. Then PEKK is added to the cooled PBI solution to form a mixture and that mixture is stirred from 30 minutes to 2 hours at room temperature to form a stirred mixture. The stirred mixture is poured into an excess of water being stirred swiftly to form an aqueous mixture. The aqueous mixture is filtered to produce a blend. The blend is washed with water and dried. The resulting blend can yield a blend in all proportion from 1/99 PBI/PEKK to 99/1 PBI/PEKK.

The present invention provides high temperature compositions comprising blends of a first polymer, poly(aryl ether ketone phthalazinone)s, and a second polymer, selected from poly(aryl ether ketone)s, poly(aryl ketone)s, poly(ether ether ketone)s, poly(ether ketone ketone)s, or polybenzimidazoles, thermoplastic polyimides, polyetherimides, poly(aryl ether sulfone)s, poly(phenylene sulfide)s, and mixtures thereof. The compositions have improved high temperature characteristics, e.g., improved high temperature load capability and improved high temperature melt processibility.

High temperature polymer blends of poly(aryl ether ketone phthalazinone)

The present invention is directed to an extrudable resin composition and a method of extruding the extrudable resin composition, comprising a high temperature engineering thermoplastic, one or more reinforcement components, an enhancing filler component, a polymeric lubricant, and an external lubricant, wherein the extrudable resin composition is capable of withstanding temperatures up to about 427&#xb0; C. The invention is further directed to the use of the extruded pipes and/or lined pipes, produced according to the present method, in downhole tubular applications in oil and gas production; in line pipe, flow line, and transportation line applications in oil and gas production and supply operations; or in most any application where corrosive protection is required to transmit or store corrosive fluids, particularly at high temperatures.
